‘Necessary Roughness’ Cancelled by USA
USA has cancelled “Necessary Roughness” after three seasons, following a steady decline in ratings since its 2011 debut.
“We are proud of this show and its writers, which had a unique ability to address topical subjects before they unfolded in real life on the sports pages,” the network said in a statement. “We want to thank Liz Kruger and Craig Shapiro, the incredible cast led by Golden Globe nominee Callie Thorne and our partners at Sony Television.”
Hourlong series debuted on USA’s lineup in summer 2011, opening to over 4.5 million viewers. By the end of its third season, however, “Necessary Roughness” was averaging around 2.5 million total viewers in its Wednesday night 10 p.m. timeslot.
Show centers on Dr. Dani Santino (Thorne), a therapist for a pro football team who begins working for high profile athletes, musicians and politicians. During its three-season run, “Necessary Roughness” tackled hot button issues including athletes coming out of the closet.
Thorne was nominated for a Golden Globe in 2011 for her role in “Necessary Roughness.”
