13 Strange and Wonderful Game Controllers

Video game pros come to the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco to schmooze, booze, and hone their skills. But they also come to push the boundaries of what games can be.

For the show’s annual ALT-CTRL-GDC exhibit, developers and artists have created games using objects not usually associated with a gaming experience – like books, masks, telegraph equipment, rotary phones, tennis balls, and doggy posteriors, to name but a few.

It’s as much performance art as gameplay. And while some of these devices might one day end up in products you will use, most will not. What’s the point? If you have to ask, you won’t understand the answer.

Here are some of the wackiest controllers we saw at this year’s show.
