Prior to Music’s Biggest Night (taking place on February 5th, 2023), here are five things to know about DOMi & JD BECK.
1. Both have a vast background in music
Louna and Beck each grew up surrounded by music. For Louna, she began her career in music at the age of three, learning drums, keyboard, and piano before enrolling in France’s Conservatoire De Nancy two years later to study jazz and classical music. She would then study at Conservatoire de Paris before traveling to America to learn at the Berklee College of Music.
For JD, a Dallas native, his musical journey started when was five when he learned piano. He would then switch to drums when he turned nine before he’d play gigs a year later. He received guidance from fellow Texas native Cleon Edwards and other musicians.
2. They met at the National Association of Music Merchants Show
As one of the music industry’s largest trade shows, the NAMM Show brings together talent from across the world. In an interview with The Dallas Observer, Beck recalled meeting Louna in “a tiny little booth.” “We both kinda struggled, and we’re making jokes about how we play, and decided to hang and play some crazy stuff together,” Beck said.
Following the event, the duo would then go on to perform for Eriku Badu’s birthday in Dallas before deciding to form a group.
3. They’ve collaborated with iconic artists
While the name DOMi & JD BECK may be new to many, the duo’s influence can be found in some of music’s heavy hitters. A year after meeting one another, the duo played as backing musicians for Thundercat and Anderson .Paak, before playing again with .Paak a year later alongside Ariana Grande at Adult Swim’s virtual festival. They also have writing credits for the 2022 Grammy-winning outfit Silk Sonic, co-writing the track “Skate” off of their debut album, An Evening With Silk Sonic. Other artists they’ve worked with include Herbie Hancock, Snoop Dogg, and Mac Demarco.
4. They’re signed to Anderson .Paak’s label
Having worked alongside the duo, .Paak signed DOMi & JD BECK to his label, APESHIT INC, earlier in 2022. In partnership with Blue Notes Records, the pair released their first single, “Smile” with their new label. In an interview with NME, Beck spoke about .Paak wanting to help the two achieve their goals with the debut album.
“When we signed to the label, he sat us down with a whiteboard and was like, ‘What do you want your album to feel like, what do you want to accomplish, and who do you want on it?’. He just made everything happen,” he told NME.
5. They’ve performed on some prominent small stages
While they may have played as backing musicians at prominent shows, DOMi & JD BECK have also had their fair share of time in the spotlight. Ahead of the release of NOT TiGHT, the duo took to Jimmy Kimmel Live! with .Paak to perform the single “Take a Chance.” The two also performed for NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert on August 10th.
