5 things to do this weekend: Farmers market, gem show, free movie screening and more
Though there's never a shortage of festivals, markets and other cultural happenings in the Classic City, we've chosen to spotlight these events for the weekend of Mar. 1-3.
Each week, the Banner-Herald will publish a list of five options for things to do in the Athens area. Please note that the events in this list are subject to rescheduling, cancelation or tickets selling out.
Athens Farmers Market
WHERE: Bishop Park (705 Sunset Dr.)
WHEN: Saturday, Mar. 2 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. (Free admission)
DETAILS: This weekend marks the opening of the Athens Farmers Market (AFM) spring season, with a selection of local farmers and artists selling everything from flowers and fresh produce to one-of-a-kind works of art. The family-friendly event sometimes features live music and kids activities. EBT SNAP cards accepted.
Free Screening: 'Dreamgirls'
WHERE: The Morton Theatre (195 W. Washington St.)
WHEN: Sunday, Mar. 3 at 4 p.m. (Free admission, doors open at 3 p.m.)
DETAILS: As part of the "Movies By Moonlight" event series, this screening of the Academy Award-winning 2006 film "Dreamgirls" is presented by Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services. No advance registration is required, seating will begin at 3:30 p.m. and popcorn and bottled water will be available for purchase.
Gem, Mineral, Fossil and Jewelry Show
WHERE: The Classic Center (300 N. Thomas St.)
WHEN: Friday, Mar. 1 - Sunday, Mar. 3 ($8 admission; free for kids 12 and under)
DETAILS: Now in its eighth year, the Classic Center's ever-popular Gem, Mineral, Fossil and Jewelry show offers something for everyone from families out for a fun weekend activity to business owners and artists. More than 24 vendors will be on hand from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
Grand Opening: Oconee County Library
WHERE: Oconee County Library (1925 Electric Avenue, Watkinsville)
WHEN: Saturday, Mar. 2 at 10 a.m. (Free admission)
DETAILS: The grand opening celebration for the Oconee County public library in Watkinsville's Wire Park development will allow visitors to tour the library's new facility, participate in a scavenger hunt, enjoy live music, a comedy magic show, Mexican folk dancing, and an "after hours" all-ages glowstick dance party.
'Love is a Blue Tick Hound'
WHERE: Town & Gown Players (115 Grady Ave.)
WHEN: Friday, Mar. 1 - Sunday, Mar. 3 ($5 admission)
DETAILS: "Love is a Blue Tick Hound and Other Remedies for the Common Ache" is a collection of four romantic and dramatic comedy one-act plays by award-winning Southern playwright Audrey Cefaly.
