5 things to do this weekend: Rumpus Rally, Boobutante, Fashion Bash, FreakFest and more

Though there's never a shortage of festivals, markets and other cultural happenings in the Classic City, we've chosen to spotlight these events for the weekend of Oct. 27-29.

Each week, the Banner-Herald will publish a list of five options for things to do in the Athens area.

Rumpus Rally

WHERE: Creature Comforts Brewery (271 W. Hancock Ave.)

WHEN: Saturday, Oct. 28 from 5 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. (Free admission)

DETAILS: For those planning on attending the annual downtown Wild Rumpus Parade, the Rumpus Rally is a great place to meet up with friends who are planning to walk together in the parade, which is scheduled to begin nearby at 8 p.m. Live music performances will include Athens artists Immaterial Possession, Bichos Vivos and DJ Tomb Lily.

Boobutante

WHERE: 40 Watt Club (285 W. Washington St.)

WHEN: Friday, Oct. 27 from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. ($25 admission)

DETAILS: If you've never seen drag in Athens before, this is the don't-miss event each year as the 40 Watt Club stage is transformed into a wonderland of spooky decadence. FreakFest '23

WHERE: Creature Comforts Brewery (271 W. Hancock Ave.)

WHEN: Friday, Oct. 27 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. (Free admission)

DETAILS: As the official kickoff event for the 2023 Wild Rumpus Parade & Spectacle, FreakFest is a first-year celebration that will include live music, food, vendors, costumes and sustainability activism. The lineup of local rock and hip hop acts features performances by Trvy & The Enemy, Motorhead2x, Izzy, Telemarket and Molly Tu Hott.

Freaky Friday Variety Show

WHERE: Terrapin Brewery (265 Newton Bridge Rd.)

WHEN: Friday, Oct. 27 at 9 p.m. ($15 admission, ages 18 and up only)

DETAILS: Presented by Athens LGBTQIA+ nonprofit LuQui Nights, this program featuring local burlesque, drag, performance art and dance acts is an all-inclusive benefit show for Athens Queer and Pride Collective's Trans Healthcare Scholarship. Monster Mash Fashion Bash

WHERE: Sister Louisa's Church (254 W. Clayton St.)

WHEN: Friday, Oct. 27 at 8 p.m. (Free admission, ages 21 and up)

DETAILS: Presented by local fashion designer BYV_Trubb and videographer Brasher Media, this massive showcase incorporates more than 60 models from the Athens area wearing designs from Trubb's Rockstar Jackets, Think Farrah Pink, Messy Stitchez and more. The event will also include live music, DJs and a costume contest.
