While being pursued by the Gestapo, they find refuge with a reclusive uncle who transmits forbidden radio broadcasts as part of the resistance, an act that soon captures Marie-Laure’s interests.

Soon, Marie-Laure’s path unexpectedly crosses with Werner (Hofmann), a teenager enlisted by Hitler’s regime to shut down these illegal broadcasts, but despite their obvious opposition, the pair are inexorably bonded by a shared cause.

Loberti is a first-time actor but appears to be a natural. In a behind-the-scenes look at the casting process, director Shawn Levy called Loberti’s audition tape a “unicorn of a discovery.” In a clip of the moment Levy told Loberti she had landed the role, the soon-to-be star is emotional and asks: “Can I call my parents?”

Ruffalo calls watching Loberti work “a revelation” and joked, “I’m a little jealous because it took me 30 years to be able to do what she showed up and did in two weeks.”

In a speech on set of the show, Loberti reveals the importance of her casting in this role, saying, “I’m so grateful to be around a group of people that has shown me that I matter and that people like me matter and that we deserve to have a say and that we can tell our story.”
