Actress Alyssa Milano and talent agent David Bugliari have This is Us star Milo Ventimiglia to thank for their romance.

The actor is a mutual friend of the couple and originally encouraged them to act on their feelings. After trusting Ventimiglia's advice, Milano and Bugliari started dating and married in 2009. They now have two children, Milo (after their famous matchmaker) and Elizabella.

In the years since their meeting, Bugliari has become Milano’s rock. The actress and activist even devoted a chapter of her 2021 book Sorry Not Sorry to her husband; she titled it “David,” and wrote an ode to their relationship, the lessons they’ve learned and how they make things work.

"People often break out the old cliché. 'Love means never having to say you're sorry.' Boy, do I call bulls--- on that," the Charmed actress wrote in the chapter. "Love, in many ways, is a constant state of apology. It means recognizing the things that you fail at, knowing that the person you love sees them too, and trying so hard to be better at them.”

Like his wife, Bugliari works in Hollywood. After growing up in New Jersey, Bulgiari relocated to the West Coast and became a talent agent.

He worked with some big companies, including Creative Artists Agency (CAA) before he and a group of agents started their own company, Range Media Partners, in 2020. They represent actors including Bradley Cooper, Gabrielle Union and Danny McBride, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Actor Milo Ventimiglia encouraged their relationship

Bulgiari's job even led him to his future wife. His client and friend, Ventimiglia, helped the pair kick off their relationship while he and Milano were filming the 2007 horror film Pathology.

The actress was signed to the agency Bugliari worked for at the time.

“I used to confide in Milo Ventimiglia and say, ‘Is that weird if I date an agent that’s at my agency?’ and he was very, like, ‘No, if you’re compatible, you should go for it,’ ” Milano told PEOPLE in 2017. “So I feel like he was responsible for my husband and me getting together.”

The couple even named their son after the actor. “I loved that name, but when Milo was born, he just looked like a Milo to me and I thought it would be a lovely homage to Milo Ventimiglia for encouraging me to find my love," she shared.

Ventimiglia has also reflected on the matchmaking experience. "Dave Bugliari is a very dear friend of mine and he is also a great agent," the actor told Steve Harvey. "He would come to set on the days that I was filming with Alyssa ... She would get excited and he'd get excited to see her."

The Gilmore Girls star continued, "One day we were in my dressing room, she and I were just talking about the scene we're about to film, and then she says to me, 'Oh my god, I love Dave.' I said, 'I love Dave!' Then she says to me, 'No Milo, I love Dave.' "

The agent and the star tied the knot in August 2009 at Bugliari’s family home in New Jersey, with Milano donning a Vera Wang gown and Cooper among the guests.

“We wanted a wedding that was reflective of who we are as a couple,” Milano told PEOPLE at the time. The pair served a family-style dinner and incorporated rustic, natural touches for a warm, inviting feel.

“My Italian family still eats Sunday dinner together every week,” Milano explained. “We wanted to capture the same feeling with people passing around beautiful bowls of food and talking and laughing.”

He’s a devoted dad

After having a miscarriage, Milano and Bugliari welcomed their son Milo Thomas in 2011 and daughter Elizabella Dylan in 2014. The actress opened up to PEOPLE in 2021 about her pregnancies.

"It was a bummer, but it felt like I got the two pregnancies I was supposed to get," Milano said of her pregnancy losses. "And that's how I kind of looked at it the entire time."

The GLAAD Award winner has also spoken about her desire to parent with Bugliari. "The first time I met David's father, I knew what a great dad he would be," Milano wrote in her book. "We got married in 2009 on the property he grew up on and started trying for a baby right after."

He supported Milano after her miscarriage

Bugliari was there for his wife as the couple dealt with her miscarriage, which occurred shortly after their wedding.

"As we sat in the parking lot of the medical building after that appointment sobbing and holding each other, he grabbed my face, looked into my eyes, and said, 'It's okay. We're going to have another baby. A better baby. That baby was a Red Sox fan.' And in that moment of some of the most desperate pain I have ever felt, I laughed,” Milano wrote in her book.

Milano feels very strongly about the strength of her relationship with Bugliari.

"David's and my lives are full of positive. Our lives are full of negative," she wrote in Sorry Not Sorry. "It would not have taken much, so often and so early on, for those poles to face the wrong way and send us shooting away from each other."

Despite the difficult moments, the pair have found their happy medium and a solid foundation. "But somehow, with work and faith and love and forgiveness and patience, we lined each other up just the right way," Milano continued. "We are bound together, a bond that is going to take something stronger and harder than anything we've faced to sever."

Because of their Hollywood careers, Bugliari and Milano are often traveling for work but they keep their love alive even when they’re long-distance.

"I mean, there are benefits to it — there's something to the adage that absence makes the heart grow fonder, and the distance forced us to communicate more and be creative in that communication," the Charmed actress wrote in her book. "Each time one of us leaves, it's almost like dating again, scheduling talks and having long-distance dinner dates."
