Anatomy of a Fall” continues its festival run at the 61st New York Film Festival on October 7. It had its world premiere earlier this year at Cannes where it won the grand prize, the Palme d’Or. Despite that, though, the film was not selected by France as the nation’s representative for Best International Feature at the Oscars. “The Taste of Things” was chosen instead. But that’s okay. “Anatomy” stands a good chance at recognition anyway.

Directed by Justine Triet, “Anatony” is a courtroom drama about Sandra Voyter (Sandra Huller), a German woman living in France with her family when her husband mysteriously dies from a fall at their home. She is accused of murdering him, and their vision-impaired son is the only witness. The trial that follows showcases Huller’s emotional performance, which conveys fear and frustration without tipping her hand as to her character’s guilt or innocence.

SEE2024 Oscars: Best International Feature Predictions

That performance makes Huller a major contender for Best Actress at the Oscars; she ranks second in our latest racetrack odds based on the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users. Courtrooms and law offices are often good places for cinematic drama given their high stakes and adversarial nature. Consider the Oscar-winning performances by Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep in “Kramer vs. Kramer,” Jodie Foster in “The Accused” and Julia Roberts in “Erin Brockovich.” Or consider the dozens of Emmy-winning performances on David E. Kelley shows.

“Anatomy” also ranks among our top 10 likely nominees for Best Picture. Having the Palme d’Or doesn’t hurt in that regard; Cannes isn’t always the most reliable bellwether for Oscars, but “Parasite” (2019) recently won both Best Picture and the Palme d’Or, and “Triangle of Sadness” (2022) just received a Best Picture bid following its Palme d’Or victory last year. And this wouldn’t be the first time a film contended for other Oscars despite not being submitted by its country for Best International Feature. That happened to “Talk to Her” (2002), which was passed over by Spain but earned Pedro Almodovar Best Director and Best Original Screenplay noms (he won the latter). So the awards race is far from over for “Anatomy” this season.
