Angelina Jolie and I have a few things in common. I’m a huge fan of Tomb Raider, and seeing as she played Lara Croft in the 2004 movie, I’d think she was, too. That, and it seems we both are keen on black and white outfits. More often than not, Jolie is seen in an all-black, all-white, or black-and-white ensemble that’s simple but still looks so chic. Honestly, I think sticking to one color (or a combo of the two) is her secret for looking put together with minimal effort. But I also think she relies on a handful of expensive-looking staples, one of which she just wore, that you can never go wrong with.

Jolie was photographed out and about in New York City, looking as chic and easy and effortless as usual. She relied on three staple pieces that everyone should have, though I’m keen on one piece that I’ve been living in for the past few weeks. She wore a relaxed-fitting white T-shirt, a must-have basic you can never have too many on hand, which she styled with a blazer to combat the chill and a simple black maxi skirt that I’m totally obsessed with. She rounded out the look with black leather boots, raffia bag, and signature sunnies, with her hair freely flowing as she walked. Simply stunning.

Jolie’s black maxi skirt, which had a column-like silhouette and appeared to be cut from breathable linen, is about as no-brainer as a fashion gets for the summertime. It’s easy to wear, which is a must year-round, but especially in summer’s heat and humidity when putting on a pair of jeans basically becomes a workout (IYKYK). It’s also timeless and versatile, which means you can dress it up or down with very minimal effort. I like how Jolie went with a easy-going tee, as to dress down the maxi, but she could easily throw on a black leather corset and be ready for an evening out. It’s as simple as that.

As mentioned, I’ve been living in my black maxi skirts, of which I owe a few iterations, and the sheer number of times I’ve already worn them—I love this Gooseberry find as well as this Aritzia piece—proves just how essential they are. As I start to pack for my Italian vacation, I’m bringing them along, as well, as I know I can wear them countless ways, which means I have to pack fewer things and more outfits. Hey, it’s girl math.

Trust me when I say a black maxi skirt, in any fabric and silhouette, will be your smartest purchase yet. Shop some that I’m eyeing, below.
