Open-toe shoes are naturally at odds with the trash-laden streets of New York City, where one misstep could result in some disastrous health code violation for your feet. But what of this summer’s hottest shoe trend, which throws caution entirely to the wind: see-through mesh or net flats? Somehow, Anne Hathaway made it work for her.

Earlier this week, the Devil Wears Prada star made a fashionable run in New York. She was spotted running errands while she repping the next evolved stage of the inescapable ballet flats craze: namely, a black iteration of Alaïa's fishnet Mary Janes.

Hathaway made the potentially hazardous footwear look utterly elegant, using them to cap off an all-black monochromatic outfit that also consisted of a sleeveless vest, a silky midi skirt, and a floppy straw hat. Her accessories were equally luxe and easygoing, from a pair of massive black shades to a slouchy Hermès Birkin bag adorned with a colorful scarf and a puppy-shaped charm. She carried another leather tote on her other shoulder, too, before finishing the look with a simple gold pendant necklace.

Hathaway previously wore these same Alaïa flats during a night out in the city last week, though at the time she paired them with pale blue loungewear set composed of an oversize button-down and lightweight pleated pants.

The actor previously described her sense of style as being “fluid” in a 2023 interview. “That’s part of the reason why I love being an actor, and my style is fluid. And once I realized that, then I felt like something clicked,” she said. “But that’s just me. It’s different. Some people are like, ‘Nope, black turtleneck every day.’”
