Mark Zuckerberg delivered a resoundingly negative review of Apple’s Vision Pro, saying after he “finally tried” the headset that he found it inferior to his pride and joy, Meta’s Quest 3.

Apple’s device went on sale earlier this month, and at $3,500, it is several times the price of the Quest 3. Even at a much lower price point, per the Facebook founder, Quest weighs less; has no wires, delivers crisper and brighter video; and is on balance “better for the vast majority of things that people use mixed reality for.”

Zuckerberg offered his impressions in a video posted to Instagram, adding a jab at Apple “fanboys.” (Watch it below.)

“I have to say that before this, I expected that Quest would be the better value for most people since it’s really good and like seven times less expensive, but after using it, I don’t just think that Quest is the better value, it’s the better product, period,” Zuckerberg said.

When the Vision Pro was unveiled last year and went on to create the biggest commotion over any new Apple product launch since the Watch, everyone “assumed” it would be the category leader, Zuckerberg said. “I know that some fanboys get upset whenever anyone dares to question if Apple’s going to be the leader in a new category,” he added. “But the reality is that every generation of computing has an open and a closed model. And yeah, in mobile, Apple’s closed model won, but it’s not always that way.”

As far as sales, there is no competition as of yet. While the Vision Pro has gotten stronger-than-expected traction thus far, according to analysts, Meta remains the dominant player in VR headsets. Figures from research firm IDC indicate that the Quest line controlled more than three-quarters of the overall market in 2022.

Formerly known as Facebook, Zuckerberg’s company changed its name changed to Meta Platforms in 2021 to reflect a shift from social media to VR, though the former still brings in a large majority of total revenue.
