Ashanti Breaks Silence On Nelly’s Proposal, Shares Details On Their Epic Spin-The-Block Romance

Fans have been just as in love with Nelly and Ashanti’s rekindled romance as they have, but nobody is more shocked by the recent events than Ashanti herself.
On set of her maternity shoot, the “Happy” singer spoke with Entertainment Tonight to discuss how she and her St. Louis-bred beau went from exes to now being engaged and expecting their first child together.
“Never in a million years did I think we would be here,” Ashanti shared. “Ten years ago
— maybe yes — but after our breakup, you know, I didn’t even think we’d ever have a conversation again.”
She shared that after they split over a decade ago, she completely closed out that chapter of her life. However, after the pair crossed literal paths in 2021 at Fat Joe and Ja Rule’s VERZUZ, Nelly got her number from DJ City and now, here we are.
When gushing over the rapper’s “shocking” proposal, Ashanti shared that it was a “beautiful, intimate moment” and he asked her hand in marriage while she was wearing his t-shirt and boxers. “I cried. I gave him the biggest hug and kiss ever,” she expressed. “I FaceTimed everyone I know […] I was overjoyed and shocked and surprised and happy kinda like all in one.”
During the early days of their rekindled romance, the singer confessed to having a real heart-to-heart with herself about what was happening. “I had to really, like, be real with myself, like, do I have feelings for him again? Like what’s going on? Because [the feelings] were out, you know what I mean. They were gone,” she noted, but admitted, “I was literally surprised that they were there.”
The 43-year-old also opened up about how different their relationship is now.
“The growth has been like superb, you know, like on both ends,” she explained. “We are both at a place where like before, sometimes we would argue and walk out, slam the door, and not talk for a few days. Now, it’s kinda like, ‘All right, you good?’ […] It’s not like holding on and bickering and we find out what the resolution is,” noting, “We are so, so aligned.”
The doting couple intend to tie the knot after their child is born. For Ashanti, she knows what month she wants to get married in, but is keeping that date to herself and hopes the wedding will be “a combination of fashion, glam, Caribbean vibes.”
