Backswings Golf and Grill to open in Tupelo Commons

TUPELO – A family friendly entertainment venue featuring golf simulator will be opening in Tupelo Commons.

Backswings Golf and Grill will open in the former location of Ethel Mae's restaurant that was in the building that's home to Kyoto, Shoe Country Warehouse, Ashley and more.

Behind the effort is Alan Larson of Tupelo, who also is competing in this week's Mississippi Amateur at the Tupelo Country Club.

"I've been in the golf world, and I've got some good friends with a similar operation in Oxford," Larson said. "I saw potential for golf here in Tupelo, especially with four golf courses nearby."

Larson said his goal was to bring another form of entertainment to the city, something that was unique.

"It will have four golf simulator bays that fit 1-4 people, and there will be seating for people who want to eat," he said. "We'll have bar seating, TVs to watch sports, and we'll be available for birthday parties, events, corporate events. We'll also have memberships for someone who might want to practice and work on their game. It'll be catered to anyone whether they've never palled or have a low-handicap. Everybody is welcome."

Larson is waiting for bids to come in on the project before committing to a timeline for opening.

When it does open, Backswings will be open every day of the week. Hours will depend on the volume of business it generates, he said.
