Connecticut is all about its pizza, especially New Haven style. Barstool Sports’ David Portnoy recently toured along the shoreline, trying a variety of pizza places in the area as part of his ongoing One Bite series.

Overall impression? Shoreline pizzerias need to get their pizza “crisper.” He says he likes a slice he can hold in his hand without all of the toppings and cheese falling off. He frequently recommended a quick blot on top of the pizza to soak up some of the grease.

Here’s what he thought about 10 Connecticut spots:

Mango’s Wood Fired Pizza Co.

Mystic, CT

He said he “wasn’t expecting this,” as he tried the slice of cheese pizza. He said the pizza has “New Haven vibes.”

Amato’s Pizza & Pasta

Madison, CT

“Such mom and pop local flare,” Barstool said of the atmosphere and service. “It’s cut new haven style. Little drippy drippy. Superb taste.”

Capone’s Pizza Bar

Branford, CT

“Does look very New Haveny,” he said. “The undercarriage is good. Really good pizza.”

New Haven Pizza Place

Milford, CT

“There’s the charcoal underneath,” Portnoy said. “It does it justice. Really good. Light New Haven.”

Mystic Pizza

Mystic, CT

“This looks almost Greek,” he said. Portnoy isn’t as much of a fan of Greek pizza.

GG’s Wood Fired Pizza

Milford, CT

“Cool spot in there, cool vibe,” Portnoy said as he walked out of GG’s with the pizza. “This looks great. This has some tang to it, almost a sweet sauce,” he said.

Sapore Pizzeria & Bar

Old Lyme, CT

Portnoy really liked this one. “This looks good. Deep reds, good cheeses,” he said. “Good undercarriage seeping off. Overall a really good experience.”

Marco Pizzeria & Restaurant

Branford, CT

Another one that Portnoy said was “cut like a New Haven-style pizza.” He enjoyed the pizza, saying it was “really good stuff, thin. Really good, quality pizza.”

Vincitori Apizza

Niantic, CT

“Good pizza, I like this pizza,” he said. “Cookies just came out of the oven” so he gave an extra chocolate chip cookie review in the video.

Carpanzano’s Pizzeria

Guilford, CT

This was one of Portnoy’s favorite places. He said it was “cut like a New Haven style, but not a New Haven. It’s a multiverse of slices.” He enjoyed the first bite. “This is great, love it. Pretty close to New Haven style.”
