The Biggest Snubs and Surprises of the 2024 Golden Globe Film Nominations

Jennifer Lawrence, Nicolas Cage and Timothée Chalamet scored surprise nominations

This year's Golden Globe movie nominations came with more than a few surprises.

Barbie earned the most nominations (nine total) of any movie this year, as the nominees for the 81st Golden Globe Awards were revealed on Monday morning. Oppenheimer followed with eight, and Killers of the Flower Moon and Poor Things both earned seven nominations.

There were several unanticipated nominees among the film categories, including Jennifer Lawrence scoring a best actress in a musical or comedy nod for her raunchy comedy No Hard Feelings.

Timothée Chalamet also got recognized in the best actor in a musical or comedy category for Wonka, in which he sings and dances as a young Willy Wonka in the origin story. (Johnny Depp earned a Golden Globe nomination for the same role in his 2005 film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.)

For the film Dream Scenario, Nicolas Cage also scored in the best actor in a musical or comedy section, as did Joaquin Phoenix for the provocative horror movie Beau Is Afraid. (Phoenix, however, did not land an acting nomination for Napoleon.)

A few notable exclusions were among the Golden Globe nominees as well.

The Color Purple, an adaptation of the Broadway musical, was left out of the best musical or comedy category. The six nominees recognized there were instead: Air, American Fiction, Barbie, The Holdovers, May December and Poor Things. The Color Purple still earned acting nominations for stars Fantasia Barrino and Danielle Brooks.

The best musical or comedy category also left out The Little Mermaid and Wonka.

According to Golden Globe Awards organizers, there were 97 films for best motion picture drama and 60 titles for musical or comedy, vying for the categories' six slots.

Considered by some to be award season frontrunners, Viola Davis (Air) and America Ferrera (Barbie) were not among the nominees for best supporting actress, a category not divided by genre.

Movies like Napoleon, Ferrari and The Iron Claw were completely shut out with zero nominations, despite having starry casts and filmmakers involved.

The 81st Golden Globe Awards will air live on CBS Sunday, Jan. 7, from 8 to 11 p.m. ET. The show will also stream on Paramount+ and be available on the CBS app.
