Bill Withers Plaza is closer to getting its own statue

BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) – The Bill Withers statue is getting closer to finding its new home at the Bill Withers Plaza.

Beckley Area Foundation announces donation event for Bill Withers statue

Music artist Bill Withers grew up in Beckley, West Virginia. Withers would go on to become a widely acclaimed music artist, with hit songs like “Lovely Day” and “Use Me.”

To honor his musical legacy, Beckley Events and the Beckley-Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce held a fundraiser for a statue of him.

Jill Moorefield, the Director of Beckley Events, said, “We have the funds now to have it bronzed and so that is the step that it is going to be taking very soon and that usually takes several months. So whenever the bronzing of the statue is done, then it will be delivered and it will be installed here sometime this fall.”

Beckley-Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce CEO, Michelle Rotellini told 59News, “We are still accepting donations. We’re down to the last $2,000 to $3,000 and anything extra will be used to go towards the interactive park and the plaza.”

They plan to make the Plaza into an interactive park, in hopes to inspire many more young artists in southern West Virginia.
