Brie Larson Shares the Advice She Gives to Newcomers in the Superhero Genre

Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise veteran Brie Larson recently disclosed the advice she likes to offer to actors after they join a superhero project.

In a Drama Actress Roundtable discussion for The Hollywood Reporter, Larson — who has portrayed Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel in four MCU movies and one Disney+ series — revealed that she likes to email anyone who joins the superhero genre for the first time and offer them advice that she would have liked to have received back when she was cast as Captain Marvel.

“I’m the first person to email everybody because it’s very specific and very strange. People are like, ‘I don’t know how to do this.’ Yeah, no one does. Why would you?” she said. “I’ll say, ‘Train, because you’ll want to be as prepared in your body as you possibly can because it only gets harder as the job goes on. And really understand how to be able to go to the bathroom in your suit.’”’ The first Captain Marvel, it was a 45-minute thing to get me in and out of that costume.”

She added that headlining a superhero movie comes with “a lot of pressure,” explaining, “I think it’s a strange thing, especially when you’re a newcomer and you’re tasked with being the most powerful blah, blah, blah of blah, blah, blah, and you feel scared. It’s so hard to be the cool, confident one when you’re like, ‘Do I know what I’m supposed to be doing?'”

Larson made her MCU debut as Captain Marvel in the superhero’s self-titled 2019 movie. She then appeared in Avengers: Endgame (2019), followed by uncredited cameos in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) and Ms. Marvel (2022). Her latest appearance as Captain Marvel was in The Marvels, which opened in theaters on November 10, 2023.

In the Nia DaCosta-directed The Marvels, Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel (Larson), Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani), and Monica Rambeau’s (Teyonah Parris) powers become entangled, forcing this unlikely trio to team up and learn to work together to stop Kree leader Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton) and save the universe.

Despite being a sequel to the $1 billion hit, Captain Marvel, The Marvels severely underperformed at the box office, finishing its theatrical run with a mere $206 million worldwide. With a reported production budget of $274.8 million, The Marvels is one of the few MCU movies to not break even at the box office. However, despite being a financial failure for Marvel Studios and Disney, Larson has indicated that Carol Danvers still has a future in the MCU.
