Broadway Licensing Global Founder Sean Cercone Steps Down, as Ted Chapin and Dan Markley Become Interim Leaders (EXCLUSIVE)

Sean Cercone has stepped down as head of Broadway Licensing Global. It’s unclear why he left the company that he acquired in 2019.

Broadway Licensing Global has announced who will lead the company on an interim basis: Ted Chapin will serve as interim CEO and Dan Markley will be interim COO. Chapin previously ran The Rodgers and Hammerstein Organization for more than 30 years and co-founded Encores! at New York City Center. Markley is a Broadway producer, whose credits include “Stomp” and “The Vagina Monologues.” He was the executive director of the New York Musical Festival from 2013 to 2018.

Founded in 2017, Broadway Licensing Global and its family of imprints, which includes Broadway Licensing, Dramatists Play Service, Playscripts, and Stageworks, has become a force in theatrical licensing and distribution. It represents more than 8,000 works, including a collection of 40 Tony Award-winning and 49 Pulitzer Prize-winning titles. Additionally, as of 2022 Broadway Licensing Global currently represents eight of the 10 most-produced plays in professional theaters and nine of the top 10 most-produced plays in high schools. The shows include “A Bronx Tale,” “JaJa’s African Hair Braiding,” “The Cher Show,” “Head Over Heels” “Summer: The Donna Summer Musical” and the high school and secondary school edition of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.”

Headquartered in New York City, Broadway Licensing Global recently launched a London office. In 2020, they launched the streaming platform Broadway on Demand, which offers exclusive theatrical content, interactive events and original programming.

Cercone was previously president of Playscripts Inc., where he created the Broadway Licensing imprint. He also served as chief business officer and senior vice president of professional and international licensing for Theatrical Rights Worldwide.
