Chevy Chase ‘Kind of Forgot’ About ‘Community’: It ‘Wasn’t Funny Enough for Me’

Chevy Chase would rather forget he was in “Community,” and for the most part, the “Vacation” actor has.

Chase, who starred in the cult favorite NBC sitcom before exiting after allegedly making racist comments on set, said during Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast that he doesn’t think much about the Dan Harmon-created series.

“Oh, I kind of forget about that,” Chase said when asked about the series. “Right, they wanted me. So I said OK…I kind of forgot about that. I honestly felt the show wasn’t funny enough for me.”

He continued, “I didn’t mind the character [but] I felt a little bit constrained a bit. Everyone had their bits and stuff, I thought they were all good, but it just wasn’t hard-hitting enough for me.”

Chase added that he “felt happier being alone, in a sense. I just didn’t want to be surrounded by that table every day with those people. It was too much.”

Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Donald Glover, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Yvette Nicole Brown, Ken Jeong, and Jim Rash co-starred with Chase in the ensemble comedy set at a community college. The show’s success spurred the #SixSeasonsandaMovie hashtag movement, leading to a film being greenlit at Peacock in 2022.

Series creator Harmon, who will executive produce the movie adaptation, and Chase have historically had a fraught relationship. Harmon joked in 2022 that it might not be “legal” for Chase to reprise his “Community” character in the film; Chase was not announced as part of the returning cast.

“I haven’t seen him since then. I think we’re OK…I’ve never been not OK,” Chase now told Maron about Harmon on the podcast. “He’s kind of a pisser. He’s angry. He called and said he was sorry. I love him now…What does he do? Is he still doing this stuff?”

As for Chase’s reputation post-“Community,” he said, “I don’t know what my reputation was among people. I just always assumed I was OK.”

Chase previously said in February 2022 that he doesn’t “give a crap” about the rumors swirling around his “Community” after four seasons on the show. “I am who I am. And I like where— who I am. I don’t care. And it’s part of me that I don’t care,” Chase said on CBS’ “Sunday Morning” (via Deadline). “And I’ve thought about that a lot. And I don’t know what to tell you, man. I just don’t care.”
