Cynthia Nixon Says Sara Ramírez's 'Arc Was Completed' on “And Just Like That...”

Fans have been speculating about whether Ramírez would return for season 3 of the 'Sex and the City' revival series

It might be time to say goodbye to Che Diaz.

Cynthia Nixon seemingly confirmed that Sara Ramírez won't be reprising her character for season 3 of And Just Like That... as she reflected on her character's trajectory — and the major life changes Miranda has seen in the Sex and the City revival series.

Nixon, 58, told Variety .that both Ramírez and the series' director Michael Patrick King "felt that that character had run its course" after the first two seasons, during which Che was a love interest for Miranda that spurred her to divorce Steve (David Eigenberg).

"They created such an amazing character — such a controversial character, but such an amazing character,” Nixon said of the Grey's Anatomy alum. “They came in and shook everything up, and then the arc was completed.”

Miranda and Che's romance — which was sparked after Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) appeared on the non-binary comedian's podcast, and was therefore introduced to Miranda — was the first time the lawyer explored an onscreen relationship with someone other than a male partner, and both the actors were keenly aware of that.

"Sex and the City was really inspiring to me and empowering around my own sexuality," Ramírez, who is also non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, said in an AJLT... documentary released after the first season.

The character of Che was "built" for Ramírez, King said in the documentary, "based on their gender identifications" — and thanks in part to Nixon, who originated the idea for a romance between Miranda and the comedian.

Originally, the idea was for Miranda to spark up an interest in her Columbia professor, Nya (Karen Pittman). But Nixon felt that didn't "sound very sexy" and instead suggested, "Why couldn't it be, you know, why couldn't it be this butch person that you're talking about having for Carrie?"

Miranda's queer identity wasn't a surprise to Nixon, who has been openly gay since 2004, and told Variety previously, "I think that Miranda had many other queer and, frankly, lesbianic qualities about her."

Things between the characters didn't end up working out — even after Miranda moved from New York City to L.A. to be with Che — and fans began speculating about Ramírez's potential departure from the series following season 2.

Filming for the third season of the revival series began in May, and Sarah Jessica Parker teased that the story "feels really lovely" this time around.

"There will be layers and complexities and complications as there always are — especially in Carrie's life," she said on Today with Hoda & Jenna on May 7.

While Ramírez's fate hasn't been officially confirmed by the streamer, Karen Pittman announced her departure from the series in March due to scheduling conflicts.

"It has been a joy to have Karen Pittman play the smart and stunning Professor Nya Wallace on the first two seasons of And Just Like That...," a spokesperson for Max said in a statement. "Due to the production realities, we are disappointed to announce that scheduling conflicts will not allow us to continue with this character as part of season 3."

Rosie O'Donnell, meanwhile, is joining the show's third season as a character named Mary, which she revealed in a post on Instagram as she attended the cast table read for the premiere episode.

Season 3 of And Just Like That... is slated to premiere on Max in 2025.
