Donald Sutherland, a Canadian actor starring in more than 200 movies and TV shows throughout his multi-decade career died on Thursday at 88 years old. The actor appeared in a film with Kentucky ties, and in a franchise with Kentucky native Jennifer Lawrence.

Donald Sutherland, renowned actor, dies at 88

Sutherland, who appeared in "The Hunger Games" films as Coriolanus Snow and played Hawkeye Pierce in “M.A.S.H.,” died on Thursday at 88 years old from a long illness.

His son, Kiefer Sutherland, posted an announcement to X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday. "With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film," according to the caption. "Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived."

Sutherland, often recognized for his character as Coriolanus Snow in "The Hunger Games" appeared on screen throughout the multi-film series with Katniss Everdeen, played by Jennifer Lawrence. Lawrence is initially from Indian Hills, northeast of Louisville.

Between 2012 and 2015, Sutherland appeared in "The Hunger Games," "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1" and "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2."

Sutherland's ties to Lawrence aren't his only connections to the Bluegrass State. Actor Josh Hutcherson, who starred as Peeta Mellark in the same film series, is originally from Union, in Boone County. Sutherland also appeared in the 1977 film "The Kentucky Fried Movie."

'The Kentucky Fried Movie' features Donald Sutherland

"The Kentucky Fried Movie," released in 1977 and directed by John Landis, includes Sutherland as "The Clumsy Waiter" throughout the film. The comedy features an array of skits and parodies with stars like Cleopatra Schwartz, Big Jim Slade and others.
