Donald Trump has opened up about his controversy with former "The Apprentice" star Omarosa Manigault Newman and revealed why he hired and eventually fired the reality TV star.

The former US president said Omarosa was a success on the reality show, but her personality didn't work out in the White House, as she was always late and "people hated her."

When asked why exactly he hired Omarosa, Trump gave a shocking response about it being an "experiment" to test her loyalty and trustworthiness.

After Omarosa was fired, she released a tell-all book on her time in Donald Trump's circle and shared insider information about his administration.

The former US president spoke to Variety's Ramin Setoodeh about his relationship with Omarosa for his new book, Apprentice in Wonderland: How Donald Trump and Mark Burnett Took America Through the Looking Glass.

During a chat with Setoodeh, Trump shared that hiring Omarosa was an "experiment" that failed because she was always late and hated a lot.

Omarosa appeared on three seasons of Trump's reality show, "The Apprentice," before being hired as his campaign director for African American outreach in 2016.

In 2017, Omarosa was appointed as an assistant to the president and director of communications for the Office of Public Liaison. However, by December of that year, White House Chief of Staff John Kelly terminated her role.

Regarding her termination, Trump said, "I saw her very little in the White House. The White House is a very big place! It's buildings, actually. But the people hated her in Washington. Her personality — she was late all the time."

"She wouldn't show up. Look, I tried to rehabilitate her reputation as an experiment. And when I did, I said, 'This probably won't work out, but let's see what happens,'" the ex-president added, per Radar Online.

Trump was asked why he decided to hire Omarosa into the White House if he wasn't sure she was trustworthy.

In his response, the former president explained that he did it as an "experiment" to determine whether Omarosa was loyal and trustworthy.

He said, "A lot of things I do in life, I do as an experiment. I mean, I do it out of human interest - just to see who's loyal, who's not loyal. She was actually really great to me until she left. And then after she left, she got a book deal, and she made some money. They could all do that. But they are scumbags when they do."

Trump further shared that he actually predicted that Omarosa would be a troublesome hire but went ahead anyway.

He shared, "I told people when we hired her, I said, 'When we fire her, we'll have nothing but trouble.' But that's OK. That's the way life goes."

Omarosa Was A Hit On The Reality Show Because Of Her 'Anger' And 'Craziness'

Trump spoke to Setoodeh about how successful Omarosa was during her time on his reality show.

He said, "Omarosa was a major hit in her first year. Her anger, her craziness, it just worked so incredibly well. She was a great television personality the first time. And then I put her on a second time, and she bombed."

Trump explained that Omarosa's role on the show was being evil, which worked the first time because she wasn't trying.

"The second time, she tried to be evil. And the third time, she tried even harder. And when you try, it doesn't work. Does that make sense?" the billionaire politician asked.

He added, "And then I helped her get a job at the White House because she was begging me to help restore her. So I figured, why not? I put her in."

After her termination, Omarosa started work on a tell-all book she eventually released in 2018, titled "Unhinged: An Insider's Account of the Trump White House."

The book featured details of Omarosa and Trump's time together and also had insider information about Trump's administration.

Regarding the book deal and controversial information Omarosa shared, Trump seemed not to care.

He said, "They don't pay, I guess if you say nice things. I hear she lost that money. I don't know — something happened. She had the whole thing with the husband, too. And the family. It was always drama."

Last year, during an interview for her show House of Villains, Omarosa expressed doubts about Trump's political prospects.

She suggested at the time that it would be difficult for him to run for president again, mainly due to his legal troubles.

"I think it would be very hard for Donald Trump to run for president from jail," Omarosa told Page Six.

She emphasized the likelihood of the 77-year-old ending up in jail before making a presidential comeback, adding: "It'll be very hard."
