Donnie Wahlberg Shares Emotional Post on Last Day of Filming 'Blue Bloods'

Despite the cast’s willingness to continue telling more Blue Bloods stories, the hit CBS police drama has filmed its final episode, which will air sometime later this fall.

Donnie Wahlberg, who stars as Danny Reagan, took to Instagram with this emotional post to say goodbye to the character and series he loves as he exited the New Kids on the Block Magic Summer tour bus:

“Last day of Blue Bloods ⬇️ Not sure I have the words to describe how I feel about today, or the last 14 years on this special Blue Bloods journey, but I do know how incredibly thankful I am for every moment of it. To the cast, the crew, the guest cast, every background actor, writer, producer and every member of every single dept — thank you.”

But it wasn’t just the cast and crew that got Wahlberg’s thanks for the 14 years he spent filming the series, he also thanked the city of New York, where the series is set, and the fans.

“To the people of New York, in every neighborhood and borough, thank you for always showing your love. To the NYPD, thank you for your support and sacrifice, I hope we did you proud. Lastly, to my fans, and the fans of this show. We don’t make it 14 days (nevermind 14 years) without you! Your love and support for this show has been one of the great blessings of my life. Thank you. #godspeed ❤️💙 #BlueBloods #Family #love #gratitude #thoughts #NYPD #NewYork #NewYorkCity”

At the time of the announcement of the series coming to its conclusion, Tom Selleck, who stars as NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan, released a statement saying, “[It’s been an] honor and a privilege to work on a show that not only celebrates the men and women who protect and serve in New York City, but also displayed the importance of family. Working alongside these incredible actors, writers, producers, directors and crew has been a dream come true and I’m grateful to have been a part of this extraordinary group for over 275 episodes."

That said, both Selleck and Wahlberg had pleaded with CBS to uncancel the series the way that they did with S.W.A.T. but to no avail.

Selleck was hopeful until the last minute, telling Parade in May, “I love the show, I haven’t started any kind of countdown because I would prefer to just stay optimistic. I’ve been through this before once with Magnum. Leaving a show in success is the legacy that we need to establish for Blue Bloods because we’re still wildly successful. And people need to get that word out if it does end. Not, we were winding down and it was time to leave. That’s not the case here.”

Then in a surprising twist, during a presentation at Paramount’s annual stockholders meeting Paramount Global co-CEO Brian Robbins hinted that a new Blue Bloods series is in the works, “In TV, new franchise extensions are coming for Dexter, Billions and Blue Bloods.”

But what would that look like? It’s hard to imagine a spinoff that would include Selleck and not the rest of the Reagan family, especially Frank’s kids Danny, Erin (Bridget Moynahan) and Jamie (Will Estes), or the kids without their dad.

Blue Bloods will return for its final episodes this fall on CBS in its regular timeslot of 10 p.m. ET/PT on Friday nights.
