Eddie Murphy Reveals 'Surreal' “Beverly Hills Cop” Sequel Cameo: 'That's My Son-in-Law Tasing Me in the Neck'

Murphy recalled filming the scene with daughter Bria's husband, Michael Xavier, 'right after they got married' in July 2022

Eddie Murphy's son-in-law Michael Xavier had a unique introduction into the family!

Chatting with Al Roker on the Today show about his new movie Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Murphy recalled how he filmed one scene "right after" Xavier and his daughter Bria wed in July 2022.

"She’s the one who arrests me," Murphy, 63, said of Bria's cameo in the film, adding, "In the other scene when I get arrested in the movie, that’s my son-in-law tasing me in the neck."

"He was on the set, tasing me in my neck. I was like, ‘This is surreal,' " the actor told Roker, 69, during their chat, which aired on Tuesday, June 18.

In the original Beverly Hills Cop — which was a box-office smash in 1984 and shot Murphy to global stardom — his character Axel Foley is a Detroit detective who goes rogue and heads to southern California to solve the murder of his childhood friend (James Russo). Murphy reprised the role of Axel in Beverly Hills Cop II (1987) and Beverly Hills Cop III (1994).

"Detective Axel Foley is back on the beat in Beverly Hills," an official synopsis for the new movie reads. "After his daughter’s life is threatened, she (Taylour Paige) and Foley team up with a new partner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and old pals Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and John Taggart (John Ashton) to turn up the heat and uncover a conspiracy."

In his interview with Roker, Murphy said he wasn't a fan of the stunts at this point in his life.

"We were shooting something and the director [Mark Molloy] said, ‘I want you to come out of this place and run down those steps.’ After we shot, he’s like, ‘Can you come down with more urgency? Faster?’ " the Saturday Night Live alum recalled.

"And I was like, ‘No! I’m not doing anything action. Don’t call me unless you offer me the same kind of s--- you would offer Morgan Freeman,' " Murphy quipped.

Asked by Roker whether he will "keep going" with his career, after previously stating that he wanted to retire at age 50, Murphy said, "I think I will keep being a creative person until the day I die."

As for whether Beverly Hills Cop fans will see more of Axel after the upcoming film, the actor said, "I hope so, because this movie turned out so good, especially if you grew up watching the [original]."

"Then you'll really, really love this new picture," Murphy added.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F hits Netflix July 3.
