In May 2022, Ellen DeGeneres‘ long-running daytime talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, came to an end after toxic workplace allegations left the host no choice but to take a break. But now, over two years since, reports are confirming that DeGeneres is eyeing a Hollywood comeback.

“She needed some time to recover,” a longtime friend of the former TV host told Page Six. “But she’s an artist, she wants to entertain — she can’t just sit at home.”

“Truthfully, Ellen was battered, she was so tired,” another source said, suggesting that the timing of the break also aligned with what DeGeneres wanted to do at the time. “She had been doing the show for 19 years and she wanted a rest.”

From the insiders, it also seems DeGeneres’ friends and family are motivating her to go back into the spotlight, and reminding her of all the good times she had as a host. “She had helped millions and millions of people, and look at all the money they gave away on the talk show. She loved her audience,” one source said. “Why would she go back?” said a former co-worker of hers. “She accomplished so much, she made great entertainment.

“Ellen is a comedian. They all have their peccadillos, but this is her life and she wants to talk about everything she went through and where she is now in her life, sharing who she is,” another source added. “Look at Jerry Seinfeld, he does stand up all the time. Why shouldn’t she get back on stage?”

As a reminder, DeGeneres already took a step back into the limelight earlier this year by recording her upcoming Netflix comedy special, Ellen’s Last Stand… Up Tour. In it, she addressed the elephant in the room head-on, per Rolling Stone.

“What else can I tell you?” she said sarcastically at the beginning of the show. “Oh yeah, I got kicked out of show business. There’s no mean people in show business.”

After insinuating that the allegations brought against her team weren’t that damning, DeGeneres joked about her one-liner at the end of each episode: “Be kind to one another.”

“The ‘be kind’ girl wasn’t kind,” DeGeneres said. “I became this one-dimensional character who gave stuff away and danced up steps. Do you know how hard it is to dance up steps? Would a mean person dance up steps? Had I ended my show by saying, ‘Go f– yourself,’ people would’ve been pleasantly surprised.”

The comedy special is set to air on Netflix later this year.
