Did Emma Stone just reinvent the sheer dress? Just when I thought I’d seen every iteration of the see-through style that has dominated the red carpet for what feels like a decade, Stone whipped out a Louis Vuitton fishnet gown for the New York premiere of Kinds of Kindness that can best be described as goth with a touch of whimsy.
Perhaps hinting at the absurdist vibes in her newest film with quirky director Yorgos Lanthimos, Stone wore a gown that mixed textures and patterns, including a checkerboard silk, which made up the gathered bodice, and a polka-dotted fishnet fabric, which draped elegantly over a pair of peekaboo briefs. The 35-year-old actor appears to be wearing the same fishnet material as tights, lending another layer to the look.
Stone let her ivory coloring work to her advantage, letting her skin stand in stunning contrast to the opaque black polka dots. Her signature red hair, currently a nearly brunette shade of auburn, was center-parted and slicked back.
Kinds of Kindness is Stone’s third collaboration with Lanthimos, her first being 2018’s The Favourite, which she starred in alongside Rachel Weisz and Joe Alwyn, and the second being 2023’s Poor Things, which earned Stone the Oscar for best actress. Stone worked with Alwyn once again on Kinds of Kindness, as well as Jesse Plemons, Hong Chau, and frequent Lanthimos collaborators Willem Dafoe and Margaret Qualley.
On her last press tour, for Poor Things, Emma Stone wore a stunning rotation of Louis Vuitton gowns with exceptional sleeves, which echoed her character Bella’s infatuation with a puff-sleeve silhouette. So, what could Stone’s Kinds of Kindness press tour wardrobe be telling us about the new film? Perhaps rich and complicated layers? A bit of chaos? A tinge of the gothic? I’ll need to see more before I make any decisions.
