Having trouble predicting what will win Best Limited Series at the 2024 Emmy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts! These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their first set of predictions, and they are divided between five different programs: FX’s “Shogun,” FX’s “Fargo,” HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country,” HBO’s “The Regime” and Apple TV+’s “Lessons in Chemistry.”

As of this writing, a leading four out of our 11 Emmy Experts predict a victory for “Shogun”: Ben Travers (Indiewire), Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Clayton Davis (Variety) and Joyce Eng (Gold Derby). The big-budget Japanese historical drama is based on James Clavell‘s 1975 novel, which was previously adapted into NBC’s three-time Emmy-winning 1980 miniseries. Cast members include Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis, Anna Sawai and Fumi Nikaido.

Two of our Emmyologists — Ray Richmond (Gold Derby) and Thelma Adams (Gold Derby) — instead believe “Fargo” will prevail. The first three installments of the quirky anthology series were nominated in 2014, 2016 and 2017, with Season 1 claiming the top Emmy. Season 5 tells the story of Juno Temple‘s Dorothy “Dot” Lyon trying to escape from her abusive ex-husband, Jon Hamm‘s Sheriff Roy Tillman.

A pair of pundits — Eric Deggans (NPR) and Kelly Lawler (USA Today) — are putting their money on “True Detective.” The first cycle contended as a Drama Series at the 2014 Emmys, winning five trophies, before switching over to the Limited Series races thereafter. Season 4, subtitled “Night Country,” stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as detectives who investigate the disappearance of several research scientists in Alaska.

Two more Experts — Peter Travers (ABC) and Shawn Edwards (WDAF-TV Fox) — forecast a victory for “The Regime.” The political satire brings Kate Winslet back to the awards conversation after winning two Emmys for “Mildred Pierce” (2011) and “Mare of Easttown” (2021) and a Best Actress Oscar for “The Reader” (2008). In “The Regime,” she takes on the role of fictional Chancellor Elena Vernham, who is equal parts paranoid and unstable.

Finally, Jazz Tangcay (Variety) goes rogue in thinking “Lessons in Chemistry” is the one to beat. Brie Larson leads the project as chemist Elizabeth Zott, whose complicated journey leads her from the science lab to the TV studio. She took home a Best Actress Oscar for “Room” (2015) and she also won an Emmy in 2020 for producing the interactive program “The Messy Truth VR Experience.”

Some of the most recent Emmy winners in the Best Limited Series category include “Beef” in 2023, “The White Lotus” in 2022, “The Queen’s Gambit” in 2021, “Watchmen” in 2020 and “Chernobyl” in 2019. Find out who will be in the running to join this esteemed list when the Primetime Emmy nominations are announced on July 17, 2024.
