Five Nights at Freddy’s Adds Peacock Streaming Record to Boffo Box Office Haul
No matter how you slice it, Five Nights at Freddy’s is a killer.
Having slayed at the box office with a global haul of $132.7 million, the video game adaptation/horror film — which opted for a day-and-date, Oct. 27 release on streaming — also emerged as Peacock’s most-watched film or series ever in its first five days, besting previous record-holders Halloween Ends, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Bel-Air and The Best Man: The Final Chapters. (Note: Peacock released no hard data.)

Based on a popular horror-survival video game, Five Nights at Freddy’s follows Mike (Future Man‘s Josh Hutcherson), a troubled young man caring for his 10-year-old sister Abby (Piper Rubio) and haunted by the unsolved disappearance of his younger brother more than a decade before.
Recently fired and desperate for work so that he can keep custody of Abby, Mike agrees to take a position as a night security guard at an abandoned theme restaurant: Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria. There, Mike soon discovers that nothing at Freddy’s is what it seems, and with the aid of a local police officer (Once Upon a Time‘s Elizabeth Lail), his nights at Freddy’s lead him into unexplainable encounters with the supernatural.

Five Nights at Freddy’s‘ box office haul, meanwhile, makes it the biggest horror film opening of 2023, as well as the biggest Blumhouse global opening of all time.
And in the U.S., its $80 million in receipts marks the second-biggest opening weekend of all time for a film based on a video game (trailing only The Super Mario Bros. Movie), and is the best opening weekend for a horror film directed by a woman, Emma Tammi.
