Florence Pugh Recalls When a Camera Broke During Her “Oppenheimer” Sex Scene with Cillian Murphy: 'Not Ideal'

Florence Pugh joked that she used a camera-related accident during one of 'Oppenheimer' sex scenes as an opportunity to learn about cameras

Florence Pugh is sharing an awkward moment from filming Oppenheimer.

At a recent Universal screening and Q&A for the 13-time Academy Award-nominated movie, Pugh, 28, shared that she and costar Cillian Murphy were once left waiting for a camera repair when it broke during one of the pair's sex scenes together.

"In the middle of our sex scene, the camera broke. No one knows this, but it did — our camera broke when we were both naked and it was not ideal timing and there weren't many cameras," she said, while speaking to her time on set. "One camera was in the shop being fixed, and [director Christopher Nolan] turned and asked someone where is the other camera?"

In Oppenheimer, Pugh portrays Jean Tatlock, a woman whom J. Robert Oppenheimer (Murphy, 47) held a years-long relationship with before and during his marriage to Kitty Oppenheimer (Emily Blunt). Pugh and Murphy share multiple nude scenes in the film.

"So Cillian and I are in this room together, and it's a closed set, so we're both holding our bodies," she said, giving herself a hug. "And this camera surgeon comes into the room and starts [doing repairs] and I'm like, 'Well, this is my moment to learn.' "

"So, tell me, what's wrong with this camera?" she jokingly recalled asking as the camera was repaired.

In addition to Pugh, Murphy and Blunt also participated in the Q&A with actor Jamie Dornan, who served as a moderator. Beyond the poorly-timed camera mishap, Pugh spoke to the wonder she felt while working on the movie's set.

"It truly felt like I was given an award where I was able to witness what it was like to be on set of how it was to make movies when movies started being made," she said of filming the movie. "Everybody was [working at] the best at their ability and you don't want to f------ sit down because you want to talk to someone and you want to ask them a question."

"There was no moment in the day where you wanted to get your phone out — first of all, you weren't allowed to, but second of all, you wouldn't want to," Pugh added. "You wouldn't want to, you wanted to ask questions."

Murphy, who received his first career Oscar nomination for his leading role in Oppenheimer, previously told GQ in July 2023 that he felt the movie's sex scenes "were vital" to its larger story.

"I think the relationship that he has with [Pugh's character] Jean Tatlock is one of the most crucial emotional parts of the film. I think if they're key to the story then they're worthwhile," he said at hte time. "Listen, no one likes doing them, they're the most awkward possible part of our job. But sometimes you have to get on with it."
