Fond du Lac's can't-miss events include Latin Flavor Carnival, dog show and more

FOND DU LAC - Get a taste of Latin American cuisines and culture when Holy Family's Latin Flavor Carnival returns to Fond du Lac.

Other events include an outdoor family movie and dog agility trials.

Here are five can't-miss events happening in the community this week.

1. Latin Flavor Carnival returns to Holy Family July 16

Last year, Holy Family expanded its Taste of Mexico event to showcase countries throughout Latin America.

“The Latin Flavor Carnival is a great opportunity for us to celebrate the heritage of our community, and to give people who are unfamiliar with the traditional music, food and games of Latin America the chance to experience them,” Holy Family Catholic Community Pastor Fr. Ryan Pruess said in a news release.

The carnival begins at 11 a.m. in the Holy Family Prayer Garden, 271 Fourth Street Way. Latin American cuisines will be available along with games and live entertainment. A Spanish Mass will be held at noon in the church.

The live entertainment lineup includes D.J. Estrella, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; the band Massive Show!, 2 to 3 p.m.; and the Ballet Folklórico Xanharati dance group, 3 to 4 p.m.

Rounding out the carnival from 4 to 6 p.m. is the Show4Kids, featuring a children’s show, dance contest and singing contest.

Admission is free.

2. Top dogs demonstrate skills at agility trials

Cheer on your favorite breed during the Fond du Lac County Kennel Club Summer Dog Agility Trials.

The event will be 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 15 at the Kennel Club, N5480 Deneveu Lane, Fond du Lac.

The agility trials demonstrate teamwork through a timed obstacle course of jumps, tunnels and weaves poles.

Trials are held outdoors, adjacent to the clubhouse. Admission is free.

3. Summer recital series features local organists

Kenneth Hill will be the featured musician at the July 13 Summer Noon Organ Recital. It will be 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Concert Hall, 39 E. Follett St., Fond du Lac.

The concert series runs Thursdays through Aug. 24. Concerts are free, although a free-will offering will be accepted toward the summer organ recitals and scholarships.

4. View a family movie outdoors at Herr-Baker Field

Fondy Flicks at the Field offers a chance to view a family-friendly movie outdoors at Herr-Baker Field. The next movie will be shown at dusk July 14. Gates open at 7:30 p.m.

Prior to the movie, there will be face painting and a balloon animal artist. The first 125 kids younger than 12 will receive 5 Spider Bucks for the concessions, prize wheel or Kids Zone.

Carry-ins and lawn chairs are not allowed. Concessions will be available to purchase. There is ballpark seating and families can take a blanket to sit on the field.

5. School bands to be featured at Buttermilk Festival

The Fond du Lac High School Summer Band and the Middle School Summer Band return for their sixth Buttermilk Festival performance at 7:15 p.m. July 19.

The young musicians have worked to improve their musical skills during the summer band season, under the direction of Chris Barnes. Rain location is the Fond du Lac High School Performing Arts Center.

Food concessions are available, hosted by a local non-profit at each concert. Take a lawn chair or blankets for seating.

Buttermilk Festival concerts are at Wifler Performance Center in Buttermilk Creek Park. Admission is free, but free-will offerings will be accepted.
