Grey's Anatomy recap: It's all about the genes
Don’t worry about the details. That’s the phrase I would use to describe this episode of Grey’s Anatomy. It’s all about the details surrounding genetics, odd surgeries, and mood swings. And it all starts with a visit from Ellis Grey.
Yes, that Ellis Grey. She appears to Meredith in a dream and rambles on about family trees and vitamins. Meredith wakes up and scribbles something down in her handy bedside journal placed there for a time such as this. Then she spends the rest of her day in a lab trying to figure out what her mother was trying to tell her.
Ellis’ other daughter is across the hospital being interviewed by the hosts of a medical podcast. Maggie ticks through her accomplishments and the fact that she’s done so much at such a young age is mind-boggling to the hosts. One quips that she was born to be a surgeon and Maggie dovetails off that thought, laughing that it makes sense since both of her biological parents were surgeons. Ellis did this. Richard did that. She’s a genius. Don’t worry about the details.
Maggie looks up to see both hosts slack-jawed and she realizes what she has done. Everyone in the medical community now knows that she is the product of a love affair with Ellis Grey and Richard Webber. Meredith is fine with the news, but Richard is not. He doesn’t want people to know the part of his story that he would rather forget. A story that resulted in Maggie. Who is standing right there. Whoopsie.
Speaking of love affairs, things are heating up for Schmitt and Kim, until Schmitt’s mom calls. Kim is offended by Schmitt’s “shush” and sadly puts his shirt back on, annoyed that Schmitt is clearly ashamed of him. Is it that he’s a guy? Or is it his personality? Why won’t he tell his mom?
We don’t know because both run off to the same surgery, to which Schmitt is immediately bumped. Jo needs to be in an OR because she just lied to her husband that she had a surgery. Seniority rules and Schmitt is sent to the pit to work with Bailey.
Why is Jo lying to Alex you ask? Well, his mother is currently knitting countless big headed baby caps for their gender-neutral child who doesn’t exist. Don’t worry about it. Jo joins Link, Jackson, and Kim in a patient’s room who is a baseball player. He has cancer in his knee, so they are going to cut through his femur and half of his lower leg, take out the cancerous part, and sew his ankle in place of his knee before he’s fit with an orthopedic leg. Because that’s what they do at Grey Sloan Memorial. Did I mention that they turn the foot around in the opposite direction? Don’t worry about the details.
The baseball player’s mom is outraged that her son never told her he had chemo and was having the bottom of his leg upgraded to mid-thigh. Jo tries to talk her down, but the mother isn’t having it. During surgery, Jo starts spouting off about how kids are the worst and ruin the lives of their parents. Who would want that in their life? Cue Jackson reminding Jo that he has a kid and Harriett’s pretty great when she’s not driving him crazy.

Jackson may take a ride on the Crazy Train once in a while, but DeLuca’s dad is definitely the conductor. Remember, Lorenzo is mentally unstable at the moment, according to Carina. But DeLuca’s concerns melt when his dad pitches a medical breakthrough that has Alex’s full support.
It’s a baby. In a bag. A womb outside of the mother. How does it work? Don’t worry about the details. Just know that it is super cool and he’s already tested it on little lambs. All he needs is funding. Carina votes no. DeLuca votes yes. Especially after his dad praises him for the man he has become. He wants to help put DeLuca on the map so he can be just as popular as his celebrity girlfriend.
Alex runs the idea by Meredith and she suggests he dig a little deeper. Then she tells him with her eyes that something is up, only Alex translates Meredith’s resting “I know something” face as constipation. Plan B: Meredith tells Carina to warn Alex that Lorenzo has a mental condition.
Carina does and Alex couldn’t care less. DeLuca, on the other hand, is disappointed that Meredith involved herself in this decision. He wants her on his side and asks her to get on board with the baby in a bag.
Meanwhile, Owen and Amelia are on the struggle bus and their lawyer is calling them out. Both have filled out the paperwork to adopt Leo, yet neither has thought of joint-custody now that Amelia is living back at Meredith’s place. The lawyer leaves them to figure things out, but instead of breaking out the calendar, Owen breaks out his feelings. He wants Amelia in his life.
Amelia begins to freak and reminds Owen that things are different now. Teddy is having his baby. It’s messy and complicated and breaking up with him is easier than the alternative. Which is loving Owen.
Owen lashes out and blames Amelia for everything. His reasoning? She sabotages all relationships. Tumor or no tumor, there is a fundamental part of Amelia that can’t love or be loved. When the lawyer returns, Amelia asks for her name to be removed from the paperwork. Leo is Owen’s kid.
While Owen is drowning in legal documents and Teddy is on her babymoon with Koracick, Schmitt and Bailey handle the strange oddities that come into the ER. What do we have today? A man who is hacking up something that looks like red arugula but ends up being a blood clot. The man’s husband doesn’t want the baby doctor (read: Schmitt) working on his beloved, but when the man starts to lose consciousness, their daughter talks him into letting Schmitt and Bailey save her father’s life.
They do save his life, of course. However, what he suffered from was a rare blood clotting disorder that is genetic. The daughter must be tested, which means she will find out which is her biological father. Roll the DNA montage!
The girl does have the disorder which means the man who coughed up a lung is her biological father. Who cares! She loves them both.
Jo is not wigging out because of Alex’s mom knitting hats. Her fear comes from not knowing what random things lurk in her body, thanks to a mother and father who are MIA. Never fear. She’s going to take a DNA test called Geonome, which experienced lovely product placement under beautiful lighting in this episode. Here’s to solid chromosomes!
Webber and Maggie make up, of course, and Schmitt pulls out all the stops with Kim by dropping and L-Bomb right before explaining that his mom has a tendency to flip out. Kim does not return the “I love you” but all seems forgiven.
And finally, Meredith gathers around her kitchen table with Derek’s sister on one side and Maggie on the other. She wants to know how they feel about the possibility of diagnosing a disease using something as easy as a vitamin?
This is what her dead mother was trying to tell her. Don’t worry about the details.
