Here's Who Does (and Doesn't) Get a Grammy For Taylor Swift's Album of the Year Win

Not all of the co-writers on Taylor Swift's 'Midnights' will receive a Grammy for album of the year, including Joe Alwyn, Lana Del Rey and Zoë Kravitz — here's why

Taylor Swift made history at the 2024 Grammys as her album Midnights won the most prestigious award of the night. But which of her collaborators also took home a golden gramophone?

After picking up her 13th win and announcing her brand-new album The Tortured Poets Department on stage, the “Bejeweled” singer made history as she took home album of the year for the fourth time, breaking a record previously held by Frank Sinatra, Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder.

In addition to thanking her fans for their support, she also made sure to give a shoutout to her friends and collaborators who worked on the album, including Jack Antonoff and Lana Del Rey who stood with her onstage.

The chart-topping album featured an array of co-writers, including Zoë Kravitz, Aaron Dessner and her ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn, who worked on the album under the pseudonym William Bowery — his third album receiving a writing credit on Swift's work.

Though Alwyn previously took a Grammy home for Folklore’s album of the year win in 2021, a recent rule change means he and other co-writers won’t receive an award for Midnights’ win.

Who wrote songs for Taylor Swift’s Midnights?

Swift and Antonoff wrote the majority of the songs on Midnights, however, they did have a few co-writers.

After working on Swift’s albums Folklore and Evermore, Alwyn penned another song with his then-girlfriend for her 10th album Midnights. Under the pseudonym William Bowery, he is credited for co-writing the love ballad “Sweet Nothing” with Swift.

Meanwhile, Zoë Kravitz, Mark Spears, Jahaan Sweet and Sam Dew helped pen "Lavender Haze" alongside Swift and Antonoff. Spears, Sweet and Keanu Torres also co-wrote "Karma" with Swift and Antonoff, while Del Rey, who was featured on "Snow on the Beach," co-wrote the track with Swift and Antonoff.

Why don't Joe Alwyn, Zoë Kravitz and Lana Del Rey get Grammys for Midnights’ album of the year win?

From 2021 to 2023, the Recording Academy stated that “all credited artists (including featured artists), songwriters of new material, producers, recording engineers, mixers, and mastering engineers” were eligible to be Grammy nominees and recipients in the album of the year category.

However, that rule was later tweaked in June 2023. In addition to stating that only “human creators” would be eligible to be submitted for consideration (to safeguard against AI contributions), they also stated that in order to earn a nomination, artists, featured artists, songwriters, producers, engineers, mixers, and mastering engineers must be credited with 20 percent of the album's playing time.

Seeing that Alwyn, Del Rey and Kravitz only wrote one song each on the album, and therefore less than 20 percent of the album’s playing time, they won't receive Grammys for album of the year.

Who does get a Grammy for Midnights’ album of the year win?

Per the Grammys official website, those credited with working on 20 percent of the album’s playing time and therefore taking home Grammys for Midnights’ album of the year include: Swift, Antonoff, Laura Sisk, Zem Audu, Bryce Bordone, Serban Ghenea, David Hart, Mikey Freedom Hart, Sean Hutchinson, Ken Lewis, Michael Riddleberger, Evan Smith and Randy Merrill.
