Earlier this season, “Bobi Wine: The People’s President” screened at the DOC NYC film festival, an annual taste-making event for non-fiction Oscar hopefuls. Though the film was not recognized by other awards groups with a nomination this season, its win with the IDA is a significant milestone in its road to a potential Oscar nomination. The IDA winner has been nominated by the academy for Best Documentary Feature in each of the last five years. The last IDA winner to not receive an Oscar nomination was “Dina” in 2017.

On Thursday, December 21, AMPAS will release the shortlist of 15 documentary films that will remain in contention for the Documentary Feature award. “Bobi Wine: The People’s President” is among the 167 documentaries that are eligible for the 96th Academy Awards.
