The old emotions find themselves in a conflict with the new ones over how to guide a 13-year-old Riley. The new emotions, led by Anxiety, even imprison the old emotions in a memory vault. Eventually, the emotions set aside their differences and Riley finds a new sense of self sometime before she starts high school.
In the funny mid-credits scene, Riley’s mother asks her how camp was. “It was good,” Riley answers nonchalantly, after Ennui, the new emotion denoting boredom, takes over. Additionally, the audience also sees how the emotions in the minds of Riley’s parents react to this response.
In the post-credits scene, Riley’s deep dark secret is finally revealed. The old emotions first meet Deep Dark Secret while being imprisoned in the vault earlier in the film. Although they leave the vault, Deep Dark Secret stays behind. In the post-credits scene, Joy reopens the vault door and convinces Deep Dark Secret to come out. Answering Joy about what Riley’s secret is, the hooded figure reveals, “We burn hole in rug.”
As Joy feels relieved, she voices her fear that Deep Dark Secret will say “the time we peed in the pool.” This prompts the latter to become fretful again and head back into the vault.
