Emma Stone and Joe Alwyn in 2024's Kinds of Kindness

Joe Alwyn has a lot of trust in his friend Emma Stone.

While discussing his new movie Kinds of Kindness alongside his costars Willem Dafoe and Jesse Plemons with Entertainment Weekly, the group discussed a variety of sex scenes featured throughout the new film from filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos.

“Having done those scenes with Yogos as the director, I trust him and Emma,” Alwyn, 33, said, referencing his past work with the pair in 2018's The Favourite. “That familiarity and trust is a huge part of it. If you are there with people that you trust and people that you admire and love, then it's a whole lot easier.”

Kinds of Kindness features Alwyn, Stone, 35, and Plemons, 36, portraying different characters in three different storylines throughout its runtime. In the film's final act, Alwyn and Stone portray a separated couple struggling to coparent their daughter.

“In Yorgos’ films, characters often go to uncomfortable places and do uncomfortable things,” Alwyn noted elsewhere in the interview, nodding toward one dark scene in the movie in which his character grows sexually violent.

“I certainly felt that with that darker scene, the tone on set doesn't massively change,” he added. “It doesn't feel like you're in a dark environment. It's all pretty light: People are friendly, people are joking.”

Kinds of Kindness comes on the heels of another Stone-Lanthimos collaboration, Poor Things, for which the actress won her second Academy Award in March; the movie also featured a hefty amount of nudity and sex scenes. Dafoe, 68, who appears in both Poor Things and Kinds of Kindness, told EW that he looks at sex scenes as another method for actors to help build out their characters.

“I don't have a problem with those kinds of scenes,” he told the outlet. “They're interesting because they push performances to another level because the level of discomfort or the level of intimacy pushes you — it has higher stakes.”

Both Plemons and Alwyn noted that Kinds of Kindness utilized intimacy coordinators on set, with Alwyn explaining that working with coordinators "essentially turn it into a piece of choreography."

"It almost feels like you're doing a dance or a fight, but having been on some projects with intimacy coordinators and some without them, ultimately, I think it's about trusting the people you're working with," he added.

Kinds of Kindness is in theaters now.
