From 10 Things I Hate About You to (500) Days of Summer, Joseph Gordon-Levitt has played his fair share of romantic characters. But, as it turns out, the actor is even more romantic in real life.

In his latest appearance at The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the upcoming Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F star made a sweet tribute to his wife, Tasha McCauley.

“Today is actually my wife’s birthday, and I’m so sad because she’s not here in New York with me,” Gordon-Levitt told Fallon. “I’m here working, and she’s back home, and I feel so terrible.”

Gordon-Levitt and McCauley, who is a tech entrepreneur and robotics expert, tied the knot ten years ago in 2014, and share two sons together.

“So, I texted Jimmy, and I was like, ‘Can I give her a special birthday present on the show?’” Gordon-Levitt said. Fallon, who’s always down for a surprise on his show, then pulled out a guitar and a mic and gave Gordon-Levitt the floor. “We’re here to make dreams come true,” Fallon said.

“This is a song by a singer-songwriter that she really, really loves, who you all might know,” he introduced. “Babe, you’re the most luminous soul I’ve ever met, and I’m so grateful you were born. Love you.”

Gordon-Levitt then started singing and playing Taylor Swift’s hit song, “Lover.” In the first line, Gordon-Levitt made a personalized edit.

“We could leave the Christmas lights up ’til July,” he sang. In the original, Swift sings January instead.

As he wrapped up the song, audience members got off their seats to celebrate the romantic gesture (and his impressive singing chops!). “Standing ovation,” Fallon told the actor. “Not too shabby.”

We’re sure McCauley is applauding him from home too!
