The sister-in-law of deceased American Airlines flight attendant Diana Ramos is “shocked” at her passing and was not aware of it until Friday, she tells PEOPLE a day after Ramos was positively identified by authorities.

Diana was found with a sock stuffed in her mouth in a Philadelphia hotel room on Monday evening, PEOPLE reported previously. Her death is being investigated by the homicide division.

“I’m shocked that something like this could’ve happened to her,” Helen Alaniz, sister of Ramos’ late husband Raymond Ramos, says. “It’s just unbelievable, because she seemed sweet.”

Alaniz says her brother Raymond and Diana kept to themselves for the most part, but lived in the same state as Alaniz.

“They pretty much kept to themselves,” she says. “Because of her schedule and flying, she wasn't always available.”

Alaniz said she had not heard from Diana since Raymond’s passing in 2021, and that it had left her worried.

“Ever since my brother passed, after that we never got any word from her,” Alaniz says. “I would call her phone number and leave her [a] message, because I wanted to hear about what she was going to do, was she gonna stay locally or move somewhere else?"

“I just don’t have any idea how that could’ve happened to her,” she says, adding that it was a difficult month because September marks the deaths of her brother, both of her parents and now Ramos.
