Justine Triet’s Cannes Palme d’Or Anatomy Of A Fall continued its buzzy awards season career on Thursday as it clocked up seven BAFTA nominations, including best director and film.

The drama was also nominated for best original screenplay, film not in the English language, actress for Sandra Hüller, casting and editing.

Triet’s nomination for best director was one of the biggest surprises given that Martin Scorsese, Greta Gerwig and Yorgos Lanthimos were shut out of the category.

The BAFTA nomination haul comes amid a strong theatrical performance for Anatomy Of A Fall in the UK, which has been a tough market for non-English language fare in recent years.

Launched there on November 10, the movie had grossed $2M (£1.65M) for Picturehouse up until Jan 15.

This result may pale alongside the $14.7M UK box office for Oscar winner Parasite in 2020 but it sees the movie surpass pre-Covid arthouse hits The Lobster and Pain and Glory, with expectations high that it will soon overtake Triangle Of Sadness’s $2.2M (£1.75M) UK gross.

The result also puts the film ahead of the UK box offices for Decision To Leave, Worst Person In The World, Old Oak and Another Round.

The BAFTA haul is not as big as Edward Berger’s All Quiet On The Western Front, which made it into 14 categories last year, but it a good sign for the film.

Expectations are growing for its prospects in the Oscar race after being sidestepped by France as its entry for Best International Feature Film in favor of The Taste Of Things.

U.S. Distributor Neon has positioned it instead in several key categories including best screenplay, actress, director, and editor.

All eyes will be on the film when the nominations are announced on January 23.
