Kate Middleton is taking charge of her summer calendar, and that’s why she felt good about her decision to appear at Trooping the Colour on Saturday, June 15. However, fans shouldn’t mistake her good days for how she sometimes feels behind the scenes when the internet consistently goes off about her health crisis — the Princess of Wales is reportedly feeling the pressure from the online criticism.

Katie Nicholl, author of Kate: The Future Queen, explained to Entertainment Tonight how Kate is feeling after a six-month royal absence. “I think a day like Saturday, where she knows the eyes of the world are on her, there is a huge amount of scrutiny that will take its toll,” she shared. “I think we can probably imagine that she probably had a long and well-deserved rest afterwards.” That’s why royal watchers likely didn’t see her just a few days later at Royal Ascot, Trooping the Colour is “going to take some recovery from.”

There was evidence that she was also physically tired from the day’s festivities. Nicholl noted, “There was a moment where she was watching the parade… and was offered a seat, which she gratefully accepted. That’s just a bit of an acknowledgment that she is not as strong, not as fit, as she was before she went into this treatment.” The royal expert pointed out that while the Princess of Wales “looked impeccable” on Saturday, fans should also offer her grace because there are bad days too — and the worldwide chatter about her health doesn’t always help the situation.

PR experts from across the globe have weighed in with their opinions about how Kensington Palace handled Kate’s medical crisis, and as you would expect, it was not done well. “The Palace’s PR team handled her surgery and subsequent disappearance poorly, by not saying enough to quell the conspiracies and far-reaching speculation that resulted in the spreading of ugly rumors,” New York City publicist Dini von Mueffling told The Drum. By not getting ahead of the story, the Princess of Wales was subjected to emotional trauma that she did not deserve — she was already going through enough with her cancer battle.

That’s why these next few months will be crucial for Kate to take control of — she will make appearances if and when she’s feeling strong. The Telegraph believes she will be following the blueprint of Trooping the Colour which translates to “a powerful emotional message, a surprise photograph, and a full-scale outing to come that no one would have expected her to manage.” It’s the best way for Kate to stay in control of a situation that’s been rather uncontrollable over the last six months.
