Kevin Costner Tells Whoopi Goldberg to ‘Take Control' During 'The View': Inside the Viral Moment

Two time Oscar-winner Kevin Costner appeared on the hit daytime talk show The View on Monday, June 17, to promote his new movie Horizon: An American Saga — which releases on June 28. After he finished talking about it though, host Whoopi Goldberg had nothing to say and instead decided to cut to commercial, leasing Costner to tell her to “take control.” We dive deep into what exactly happened during this viral video moment and why Costner felt the need to say that below.

What happened on ‘The View’ between Kevin Costner and Whoopi Goldberg?

While discussing his new Western film, Goldberg asked Costner what he wanted people to take away from his new film, to which he responded, "America started to make this march across this country, and that promise was if you're strong enough, if you’re tough enough, if you’re resourceful enough, you can hold onto it. The problem was there was a group of people who were here for 15,000 years who had a way of life, and so, the promise of America ran right into the dream of another people that had been existing quite nicely without us."

Once Costner finished talking, Goldberg said, “Oh, OK. I just — yeah, OK," before announcing the forthcoming commercial break.

Costner, however, was less than pleased with this, telling the host, “Take control of this Whoopi, honestly. Tell those sponsors to stand down. We’re talking!” The audience laughed, and so did Goldberg; however, it was unclear whether Costner was joking or not.  The two did keep talking though, after the commercial break.

What is Kevin Costner’s new movie about?

Horizon: An American Saga takes place over a 15-year period and shows viewers the trials and tribulations that occurred before and after the Civil War in the expansion and settlement of the American West. Costner wrote, directed and starred  in the film, which could explain why he felt  so deeply while talking about the project on The View..

Horizon: An American Saga is set to be released in three parts, with part 1 hitting theaters on June 28, 2024. The second film  is set to release later this year, with part 3  releasing hopefully sometime next year.

The film also stars Sienna Miller, Abbey Lee, Jamie Cambell Bower, Ella Hunt and Sam Worthington. Costner’s son Hayes Costner is also set to make his film debut in the film.

"He's [Hayes]  a beautiful boy, and he's quiet. And I have not shoved my children into the business,” Costner told The Today Show. "I realize there's so many young actors out there that would just kill to be in this movie. And I don't want to take those parts away from them just ‘cause I can place my own children in, but, in a sense, since it was a smaller part, I selfishly wanted him with me for the week, two weeks, he was with me. And we would drive to the set every day, and he would whisper. He didn't have a lot of experience, but he's really beautiful in the movie."

Horizon: An American Saga will mark the second high-budget project Costner has done in the past years, with the first being the hit show Yellowstone.
