Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes Are First Black Starting QBs To Face-Off In AFC Championship Game

Last NFL season, fans bore witness to the first-ever Super Bowl matchup starring two Black starting quarterbacks; Patrick Mahomes was one of those quarterbacks, and led his Kansas City Chiefs to victory. He will make history again this season, but this time on the final stop before the big game, as his team takes on Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens in the first-ever AFC Championship matchup between two Black starting quarterbacks.

Mahomes led the Chiefs to a close victory over the Buffalo Bills in their divisional round matchup on Sunday evening (Jan. 21). He threw for 215 yards and two touchdowns in the 27-24 win that came down to the wire, overcoming the Bills going into the fourth quarter with the lead.

Meanwhile, in Baltimore, Jackson put on a clinic throwing for 152 yards and two touchdowns, plus recording 100 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground. The game was tied 10-10 going into halftime before the Ravens shut the Houston Texans out in the final two quarters while putting up 24 points for a final score of 34-10.

This wasn’t an easy season for Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. They got upset by the Detroit Lions in their season opener before going on a six-game winning streak. They went 5-5 to finish the season, clinching their division and defeating the Miami Dolphins in the wild card round before Mahomes had to play on the road in the playoffs for the first time in his career.

Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens, on the other hand, were consistently dominant through the regular season. In their four losses, they never lost by more than a touchdown, and three of the four were handed to them by their division rivals, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns. The Indianapolis Colts upset them with a three-point loss in overtime, but the Ravens went on to take the No. 1 seed in the AFC, which earned them a first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Mahomes is no stranger to the AFC Championship; in fact, he has made it to the highly-coveted game in all six seasons that he has been the starting quarterback for the Chiefs, winning three in the past and two Super Bowls in the process. Jackson, on the other hand, has something to prove, as this will be his first time competing for the AFC title. The game will take place next Sunday (Jan. 28) at 3 p.m. ET and is sure to be unforgettable.
