Lottie and more pets up for adoption in Phoenix-area shelters this week

Every year, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of those, about 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.

Each week, The Arizona Republic highlights a handful of the many pets up for adoption at Valley shelters. To check the status of a specific animal, please contact the shelter directly.

Lottie: Needs a home in time for the holidays

As a part of the Arizona Humane Society’s mission to continue saving as many vulnerable pets as possible, the shelter works with other rescues through its Project Reachout Program. This lifesaving program allows AHS to bring in pets that are in need of medical care from other shelters when space allows.

One of hundreds of pets saved each year thanks to this program is sweet little Lottie, a 10-month-old black Labrador Retriever. The lovely pup was found as an injured stray on the San Carlos Reservation earlier this month. Upon examination in AHS’ trauma hospital, it was found that she has tick fever which she has been receiving medication for.

Sweet, wiggly and full of puppy energy, Lottie’s tail almost never stops wagging. Even while undergoing treatment in the shelter, she never lost her loving spirit and outgoing personality.

How to adopt: Thanks to Bissell Pet Foundation, all adoptable dogs and puppies will have just $20 adoption fees through Sunday, Dec. 17. Interested adopters can meet the loving little Lottie at AHS’ South Mountain location. Her adoption fee includes her spay surgery, current vaccinations, a microchip, and a follow-up wellness exam with a VCA Animal Hospital. Visit azhumane.org/adopt for more information.

Barbie: Looking for a dream house

Barbie is a beautiful girl, barely past kittenhood herself and already a mother.

She and her four babies were found abandoned at an apartment complex and thankfully rescued. The little family was brought to Sun Cities 4 Paws Rescue. Barbie is ready now for a forever home, just in time to celebrate the holidays with her new family.

She is spayed, has had all of her shots, and is microchipped. Despite her past, she is a very sweet girl and gets along well with the other cats.

When she wants anything, she gets into her talky mode.

She will bring a lot of love and fun into your life.

How to adopt: Barbie is presently at the shelter at 10807 N. 96th Ave., Peoria. Please call 623-773-2246 Tuesdays-Saturdays from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. She will love to see you! Other adoptable cats are at 11129 Michigan Ave., Youngtown. Call 623-876-8778, same days and hours, and the Surprise PetSmart, 13764 Bell Road.

Eeyore: Looking for a snack

One-year-old, adorable Eeyore arrived at the Arizona Humane Society when her owner could no longer care for her. Upon arrival at the shelter, the medical team found several ticks on her as well as discovered through bloodwork that she had a disease called e-canis (commonly known as tick fever) which she developed after being bit by an infected tick.

This sweet pup received medical care through the shelter’s trauma hospital and after some medication and a stay with one of AHS’ Foster Heroes, Eeyore is ready for a new forever home! For pets like this adorable American bulldog, fosters play an incredibly important role in their journey to adoption as they provide a loving, quiet place for pets to continue receiving care.

A true staff favorite, Eeyore is an incredibly affectionate girl who loves everyone she meets. Like most dogs, she is very food motivated, loves treats, and would be a great candidate for positive reinforcement training to help her build her confidence. Eeyore also loves a “good lean” which is her way of asking for you to pet her.

How to adopt: Thanks to Bissell Pet Foundation, all adoptable dogs and puppies will have just $20 adoption fees through Sunday, Dec. 17. Interested adopters can meet the extra cute Eeyore at AHS’ South Mountain location. Her adoption fee includes her spay surgery, current vaccinations, a microchip, and a follow-up wellness exam with a VCA Animal Hospital. Visit azhumane.org/adopt for more information.
