Luke Combs Reveals One Painful Aspect of Son Beau’s Birth That Still Brings Him to Tears

Luke Combs has always worn his heart on his sleeve as a father. Last month, he penned an emotional handwritten letter to his sons that teased at his new song, “The Man He Sees in Me,” and now, he’s getting choked up talking about the birth of his 10-month-old son Beau.

Nearly a year later, the country music star is candidly discussing the day Beau was born and why it was simultaneously one of the craziest, best, and worst days. On an episode of The Zane Lowe Showe, the country music singer explained that he was on tour in Australia on that special day.

“I probably woke up at around 8 a.m. Australia time, and I had a text from my wife [Nicole], and it said, ‘I’m so sorry, I really tried to not have the baby while you’re gone,'” the “She’s Got the Best of Me” singer said.

“God, dude, it sucked,” he continued, getting emotional and holding back tears.

Thankfully, Nicole sent the text while she was on the way to the hospital. It’s not like Beau was born while his dad was sound asleep down under. So even though Combs got to “be there” virtually, we know that isn’t the same as being by your partner’s side. “[Beau] was two and a half weeks early, and I was supposed to be home and I wasn’t,” Combs said, clearly feeling guilty for something that was outside his and Nicole’s control (Girl, don’t apologize!)

Nicole had her mom and sister with her when little Beau was born, and Combs said he was so happy about that. “My wife had a really great support system with her for that experience, which I’m very thankful for.”

Combs’ newest album, which is aptly named Fathers & Sons, is a deep dive into fatherhood. But the CMA winner didn’t write about that “defining moment” last August. “I didn’t cover that too much in this album because it’s really hard for me to deal with,” he admitted.

Luke and Nicole also share a 2-year-old son, Tex, and even though it won’t make the memory of missing Beau’s birth any less painful, it might be a comfort for him to know he might witness another birth down the line. Last year, Nicole shared on Instagram that the Combs crew could grow.

“We decided on 4 [kids], max. But we also may stop at 2, who knows?” she told followers, per People.
