“It’s incredibly validating to make something that delights people,” co-creator and star Patrick Brammall reveals to Gold Derby during our Making of “Colin from Accounts” video roundtable alongside fellow co-creator and star Harriet Dyer. “It’s really hard to quantify that; to have made something that was entirely original and work really, really hard on it and to have it be delightful for people. I don’t even know how to bottle that, but that’s a huge part of it for me,” he says during our hilarious Q&A celebrating the show’s acclaimed first season and its rising popularity in the U.S. . “It’s hugely satisfying for people to actually find some comfort, because I know that’s what I look for in the stuff that I love to watch, the comedies that have shaped and influenced me are like, ‘oh, thank God that’s in the world.’ I feel a bit more connected to everybody.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Real-life married couple Brammall and Dyer star in the Aussie rom-com (that they co-wrote together) as Gordon and Ashley, two complete strangers whose lives are turned upside down by a chance encounter. Gordon, distracted while driving, accidentally hits a stray dog with his car after Ashley impulsively flashes him as she crosses the road. They name the injured dog Colin, move in together to look after him, and eventually fall for each other. The CBS Studios co-production is a critically acclaimed, award-winning hit Down Under, and has become a breakthrough for Paramount+ in the U.S., scoring its first U.S. accolades at the inaugural Gotham TV Awards, where it swept the comedy categories by winning Breakthrough Comedy Series and Outstanding Performance in a Comedy Series for co-creator and star Dyer.

“I’ve always been a little bit entranced with the idea that people walk into posts or run out the back of a car or something because they’ve seen another person that they find attractive,” Dyer laughs when recalling where the initial idea for the show’s “meet cute” between the two leads came from. “I just feel like that is a story that that happens more than we know, because no one’s proud if they come home with a ding in their car and say there was a hot guy on a bike, you know what I mean? Or a hot girl,” she explains. “Yeah, more likely a hot girl. Whatever you’re into, whatever you’re into, it’s one of those ones that happens,” Brammall interjects with a sheepish grin. “It’s like a lot of near misses in life. Unexpected lust leading to unexpected injury. I liked that these two people would have nothing else between them apart from that initial moment where she decided there was enough something between them to flash her nipple,” Brammall explains about the show’s proudly unconventional introduction. “Because she’s had tequila, I should say. She’s not the kind of girl to do that. I liked the idea that it when the dust settles, she still did that and he saw that,” he smiles.
