Mark Margolis, who played Hector Salamanca in Breaking Bad and its spin-off Better Call Saul, has died at the age of 83.

Margolis died Thursday at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City following a short illness, his son, Knitting Factory Entertainment CEO Morgan Margolis, told The Hollywood Reporter.

As Hector Salamanca, the elderly don of the Salamanca drug cartel, Margolis appeared in eight episodes of Breaking Bad. His performance earned him a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in 2012.

Margolis later reprised the character in the Breaking Bad spin-off series Better Call Saul, appearing in 22 episodes.

Margolis’ other notable roles included as “The Shadow” in Brian De Palma’s film Scarface, as Ace Ventura’s landlord in Ace Venture: Pet Detective, and as Antonio Nappa in the HBO series Oz. He was also a frequent presence in Darren Aronofsky’s films with roles in Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain, and The Wrestler, among other titles.

His final role came in the 2023 Showtime series Your Honor opposite Breaking Bad co-star Bryan Cranston.
