The long-in-development Masters of the Universe remake has finally found the power to move forward, with a new live-action reboot heading to cinemas in 2026.

To say the Masters of the Universe remake has had a bumpy road to officially receiving a green light is a bit of an understatement. Originally based on the Mattel toy line of the same name, the brand inspired the now-nostalgic 1983 animated series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe before a live-action adaptation starring action star Dolph Lundgren in the leading role arrived in 1987.

Over the years, various writers and directors have been attached to a big-screen reboot — from Terminator Salvation filmmaker McG and The Dark Knight screenwriter David S. Goyer to Wicked’s Jon M. Chu and Renfield’s Chris McKay.

In the interim, the character has found a second life on Netflix through the Kevin Smith-produced animated series Masters of the Universe: Revelation. However, He-Man has yet to make his grand return to the big screen… until now.

The Masters of the Universe remake will hit cinemas on Friday, 5 June 2026. It will be written by ParaNorman scribe Chris Butler.

Hot off 2023’s pink-covered mega-hit Barbie, Mattel Films will be on producing duty with Bumblebee filmmaker Travis Knight directing.

Masters of the Universe follows Prince Adam of Eternia, a young man who is transformed into the muscle-bound hero He-Man when he wields the Power Sword.

With super-powered skills under his belt, he must protect his home planet of Eternia and the Castle Grayskull from a variety of foes, most famously the evil Skeletor.

Previous Masters of the Universe adaptations have followed this general theme, with 1987's live-action adaptation transporting the action from Eternia to Earth and featuring appearances from Frank Langella as Skeletor and a young Courteney Cox as a woman who is pulled into the action.

The official synopsis for Masters of the Universe reads: "The film will follow 10-year-old Prince Adam who crashed to Earth in a spaceship and was separated from his magical Power Sword — the only link to his home on Eternia.

"After tracking it down almost two decades later, Prince Adam is whisked back across space to defend his home planet against the evil forces of Skeletor. But to defeat such a powerful villain, Prince Adam will first need to uncover the mysteries of his past and become He-Man: the most powerful man in the Universe!"

As production on Masters continues hopefully we’ll get some more concrete story details soon.

So far, only one actor has been confirmed for Masters of the Universe, with The Idea of You’s Nicholas Galitzine nabbing the role of Prince Adam of Eternia, AKA blonde-bobbed hero He-Man.

West Side Story’s Kyle Allen was cast in the role before Galitzine, but left the project after it was dropped by Netflix in 2023.

Noah Centineo, from To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, previously dropped out after being picked to play He-Man. Twilight’s Kellan Lutz had also been linked with the role.

We currently have no word on who might play He-Man’s enemy Skeletor or any of the other people who inhabit his native Eternia.
