After living in Los Angeles for nearly three decades, Carrie-Anne Moss left the city and moved with her family to New Hampshire — a decision she doesn’t regret.

During an interview with PEOPLE, The Acolyte star, 56, discussed how she, her husband Steven Roy and their three children relocated in 2020.

“We were just really craving a quieter life, less traffic, more nature — and I have to say, I like change,” she says in this week’s issue, adding, “My husband and I really wanted more connection to nature, really. I wanted to see the stars at night. I wanted to be surrounded by trees. I wanted to have winter, fall, spring and summer.”

Moss moved to L.A. in the early ‘90s while she was filming the CBS crime drama Dark Justice, which ran for three seasons. Being in L.A. provided the actress with the opportunity to frequently audition for other parts, including the gravity-defying character Trinity in 1999's The Matrix.

She scored the role alongside Keanu Reeves and the movie catapulted her to stardom. "Never thought in a million years I would get it,” she admits. “Getting that job was the moment that transformed a lot in my life, for sure.”

That same year was transformational in her personal life too. She married her "best friend" Roy, an actor, in November 1999. They share three children together.

“There's no one I'd rather talk to than my husband,” Moss says. “We both just are in love with what we've created together, and we have a lot of fun."

Making the move to New Hampshire has been more conducive for Moss’s passion for meditation and Kundalini yoga, which she calls “medicine for my soul and spirit.” Practicing both became increasingly helpful once the actress became a parent.

“You have a huge responsibility when you have children, you want them to have a great life, and you want the world to be a wonderful place for them,” she says of her kids, ages 21, 18 and 15. “You start to worry, or I started to worry, just about everything. I remember really leaning on my yoga and meditation almost as medicine for my soul and spirit to just relax, to trust and have faith because if we listen to the mind just chatting at us all the time, we can get really neurotic and exhausted, really.”

This year marks Moss and Roy’s 25th wedding anniversary. It’s a milestone that hasn’t totally sunk in for Moss, who doesn’t view time and age the way many people do.

“I feel like everyone's sort of my age, then they're 35 or they're 75,” she muses. “I'm just grateful that I'm happy. I look at it more from that perspective. How vital and healthy can I be?”
