What May Be Behind This Young Mom’s Fixation That She’s Going Blind

Jessica says she’s convinced that she’s going blind. She says something changed after she hit her head four months ago. She claims she has to stay in dark rooms because the bright lights hurt and that she sometimes spins in circles to stop the pain.

The mom of two admits her obsession with her eyes has ruined her marriage and is hurting her relationship with her young children.

In the video above, Dr. Phil shares with Jessica different theories as to what may be causing her to believe that she’s going blind.

“What’s been ruled out, I think, in very strong terms is that you’re not faking or making this up in any way. This is not something that you just decided to pretend to have a problem,” Dr. Phil says.

He adds that the Dr. Phil show arranged for her to be examined by Dr. Vivek Patel, Associate Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology and the Director of Neuro Ophthalmology at USC Keck School of Medicine and a top ophthalmologist, who reported that Jessica has zero threat of losing her vision.

“What I think is going on with you is you started to have an internal dialogue, a conversation with yourself, that’s very upsetting. And I think you don’t know how to express that, and so, your body starts to express that through somatic channels,” Dr. Phil explains. “I think we could treat your eyes for 50 years, and they wouldn’t get better if we didn’t deal with what’s causing your eyes to express the underlying feeling.”
