One-handed carpenter becomes popular piano player with viral videos

ST. LOUIS – Jeremy Genin, originally a carpenter and certified diesel mechanic, made an unexpected leap into the music world after starting as a bouncer at The Big Bang, a piano bar that would become pivotal in his career.

“I started bouncing at this piano bar, called The Big Bang,” said Jeremy Genin, a one-handed piano player. “But through interactions with clients, they recruited me to start learning piano.”

Genin took piano lessons while working at his day job in construction, but he initially tested his skills by booking shows two hours away from home to perform in front of live audiences. His dedication and his personality helped him become part of the local music scene. Then the pandemic hit.

“When COVID hit, I realized I had this hidden talent,” Genin said.

He then used social media by live-streaming performances that attracted thousands of viewers and revived opportunities for live shows.

Despite setbacks from COVID and an accident causing a debilitating shoulder injury that temporarily halted his career, Genin continues to play today.

“I strained muscles in my shoulder, pinching a nerve that shut down my hand,” Genin recalled. “I had to relearn how to play because I couldn’t move my hand the same way.”

Genin started out on a rehabilitation journey, spending hours daily to regain partial function crucial for his performances. His determination paid off, enabling him not only to resume playing but also to innovate with new techniques, such as using a looper to enhance his performances.
