Oscar Experts predict ‘Godzilla Minus One’ will win Best Visual Effects

Having trouble predicting what will win Best Visual Effects at the 2024 Academy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s Oscar Experts! These savvy prognosticators from major media outlets have chimed in with their first round of predictions, and they say the trophy will go to “Godzilla Minus One.” The other four Academy Award nominees are “The Creator,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” “Napoleon” and “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One.”

As of this writing, a leading 20 out of our 24 Oscar Experts predict a victory for “Godzilla Minus One”: Andrea Mandell (People Magazine), Anne Thompson (Indiewire), Brian Truitt (USA Today), Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Claudia Puig (KPCC), Clayton Davis (Variety), Jazz Tangcay (Variety), Keith Simanton (IMDb), Michael Musto (Queerty), Nikki Novak (Fandango), Peter Travers (ABC), Ray Richmond (Gold Derby), Sasha Stone (Awards Daily), Shawn Edwards (WDAF-TV Fox), Susan King (Gold Derby), Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby), Tariq Khan (Gold Derby), Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby) and Wilson Morales (BlackFilmandTV).

“Godzilla Minus One” is the 37th film in the Godzilla franchise and the first one to receive an Oscar nomination. The Japanese monster flick from writer/director/VFX artisan Takashi Yamazaki tells the story of post-war Japan dealing with the emergence of the giant lizard.

Two awards pundits instead believe “The Creator” will prevail in Best Visual Effects: Eric Deggans (NPR) and Erik Davis (Fandango). In the film, director/writer/producer Gareth Edwards tells the story of Earth in 2070 not long after artificial intelligence has taken over the world.

Finally, Oscarologists Joyce Eng (Gold Derby) and Matt Neglia (Next Best Picture) pick “Napoleon” as the winner. Ridley Scott‘s big budget biopic stars Joaquin Phoenix as Napoleon Bonaparte, Emperor of the French, and Vanessa Kirby as Empress Joséphine.

Currently at Gold Derby, none of our Experts are predicting a win for the other two Best Visual Effects nominees, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One.” However, many more awards pundits will soon be making or updating their own Oscar predictions, so that could change in the coming weeks.
